Reform Judaism was hailed
as the religion of the future
by Walter W. Weismann, prom-
inent New York industrialist
and lay leader in Reform Juda-
ism, at a luncheon of leaders
of the three local Reform Tem-
ples, at the Statler Hotel, Jan.
5.
Speaking on behalf of the
Combined Campaign for the
support of the Union of Ameri-
can Hebrew Congregations and
Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion,. Mr„ Weis-
mann reported that, in the last
10 years, the numerical strength
of Reform Judaism has more
than doubled. He said that the
Reform movement today • em-
braces 520 congregations with
a total membership of approxi-
mately 1,000,000 persons, as
against a total of 300 congre-
gations and 500,000 members a
decade ago.
"For many years now," Mr.
Weismann said, "we have been
alarmed at the weakening of
great spiritual forces in our
country and the triumph. of
material values over moral
values. There has been evi-
dent, not only among the Jew-
ish people, but among all
faiths, a new resurgence of in-
terest in family and religious
life. Recent published figures
showed appreciable gains in
attendance at churches of all
faith. Similar increases were

noted in attendance at SUnday
and Religious Schools."
Mr. Weismann emphasized
that the revitalization of our
religious movement will be our
most effective counter - attack
against juvenile delinquency
and moral decay.
He pleaded for increased
support of the Combined Cam-
paign for American Reform
Judaism, the national fund-
raising arm of the Reform
Jewish movement in this coun-
try.
The Combined Campaign is
now seeking to raise $2,397,000
to meet the combined mini-
mum needs of r these institu-
tions. Detroit's quota is $66,000.
Cooperating in the Campaign
are Temple Beth El, Temple
Israel and Temple Emanuel.
