Judge Polier Criticizes
Mass Adoption Laws

BOSTON (JTA) -Massachu-
setts' adoption laws, which have
given rise to the current battle
over four-year-old Hildy McCoy,
whose Jewish foster parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Melvin B. Ellis, are
fighting to retain custody, were
scored here by Judge Justine
Wise Polier at the 30th annual
convention of the AJC New Eng-
land Region.
Judge Polier hit out at reli-
gious groups which invoke the
State "to act as a policeman and
force a religious choice upon a
mother."
In her attack on the statute,
Judge Polier said that measures
that seek to use the State to com-
pel support of religious institu-
tions "not only violate the Amer-
ican Constitution, but the essence
of true religion."
