Are Israelis Becoming the Irish?

WASHINGTON Are Israelis
becoming, the "Irish" of the
Middle East? Have Israel's mili-
tant defense policies caused AM-
ericans to view Israel different=
ly?
An informal • public opinion
poll aimed at eliciting views on
Isrgel's so-called "reprisals " pro-
duced surprising results. Prates,
sional persons and other intellec,
.tuals tended to deplorp the re-
prisals,. citing moral grounds.
But the man-in-the-street, tradi-
tionally suspected of more wide
spread prejudice, showed a dif-
ferent attitude.
The latter group included sol-
diers, sailors, marines, taxi driv-.
ers, elegtricians, postmen, deliv-
ery men, farmers, store clerks,
secretaries, factory workers, cam:
mon laborers, and so forth. All
persons questioned were believed
to be non-Jews. About one-fourth
were either completely unin-
formed about the Middle East
or had no opinion.
A fact that seemed to impress
the majority was that Jews
hid proved they •could and •
would fight. They knew, for
the most part; that Israel was
heavily outnumbered: As a rule
they did not condemn reprisal
actions. -M y remembered
from recent headlines that the
Arabs- were getting Communist
arms white ISrael had difficulty
buying weapons from the free
World.
It was this group which. reads
headlines rather than editorials
that indiCated the greate-st sym-
pathy for Israel. Almost every-
one was confused about demili-
tarized zones, mixed armistice
commissions, and so forth. One
element frequently singled out
as disturbing was the Commun-
ist-Egyptian arms deal. Many ex-
pressed fear of 'another Korea."
In this analogy they saw Israel
as a -second "South Korea" with
Egypt in the role of "North
Korea."
Some criticized Jew and Arab
alike, But only two indhdduals
out of 50 in the non-intellectual
Category condemn&I Israel alone.
collpge proftss9r expressed
the thought that anti-Semites
who for 2,000 years accused Jews
of- being "too cowardly" might'
now brand- Israel "too warlikeillt
The man-in.-the-street coin-
mented: "I guess the Jews have

Tel Aviv Strike Ends

.

•

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—Tel. Aviv's
municipal' workers' strike ended
' Monday after arbitrators had re-
ceived both parties agreement to
a settlement. It was agreed, to
avoid friction, efforts should be
made fog the merger of the two
municipal workers' unions.

learned to fight at last. I never
thought they had the guts . .
There are more Arabs than
Jews so I don't see what the
Arabs have got to cry about."
An Irish-American wrote the
Israel embassy, backing Israel's
defense.- ideas. To show -friend-
ship, he added two Hebrew
phrases to his good wishes. He
said "Mazel Toy and Bar Mitz-
vah." Most Israelis who read the
letter thought the Irish-American
was contused about the meaning
of these two terms. But one view
was that "Mazel Toy" could be
applied to the success of Israel
military operations. The phrase
"Bar Mitzvah" might be used to
express an idea that Israel has
reached manhood.

Agency repoiteci that among the
10 top. events of 1955 the Israel-
Arab situation ranked fourth in
world interest. The USIA linked
this situation with Communist
attempts to penetrate the Arab
world. • A survey of American
newspapers showed that since
September more space was • de-
iated to the Middle East than
the Far. East. Israel figured.
prominently in the headlines.
