redict Momentous Events
As Hangover to Netv Year's

By the Oak-Woodseri
New Year Eve a thing of the
past, suburbanites this week be-
gan adjust ing to a hangover of
366 days . in 1956—including an
extra day because of Leap Year.
What h ave South Oakland
COunty's J ewish citizens to look
forward to in the year ahead?,
thin gs are planned.
og ram
Oak Par k's building pr
apparently is to continue • as it has
in the pas t. Land is not as
readily- a.v ailable as in previbus
years, bu t building seemingly
goes on at a steady pace.
The upb uilding of the area has
meant an increasing number of
Jewish res i•dents, notably in Oak
•
Park and now in Southfield
Township.
What fat ilities can be expected
in 1956 to accommodate `this new
growth? •
A new Jewish Center will be
built this year, its program be-
ginning to function during- the
summer probably with day camp
activities.
Three new synagogues will
rise during the year. All of
them are scheduled for comple-
tion by t he time of High Holy
Day sery ices early in .Septem
-
•
ber.
The new synagogu-es are those
of Cong. Emanu-El, Cong. Beth
Shalom and Cong. Bnai David.
A. fourth congregation, Young
Israel Cen ter of Oak-Woods, cur-
i'ently has the only Jewish build=
ing in the Oak-Wbods community.
During the past .year, -like the
s
growth of its houses and commer-
cial buildin gs, there .has been a
steady inc rease in the member-
ship of se rVice organizations, in-
. chiding
adassah,
Jewish War
Il
Veterans, Bnai Brith and
Women's American ORT.
It is our prediction (and at this
time of tl ie -year we feel free in
making th em); that 1956 will be
the biggest year Of joining to
date.
Almost anyone we talk 'to has
becOine a member of a synagogue
—and if not, then they are plan-

ning to join ."as soon as the chil-
dren are Old enough to go to
Sunday School."
_ • We most assuredly do not en-
dorse the latter attitude, but use
it solely • as the basis for our
prediction. We feel, too, that it
is -an *optimistic sign of positive
identification.
. During 1956, we know that
suburban Jewry will be called
-upon to participate more ac-
tively in philanthropy, particu-
larly in the Allied Jewish
Campaign.
With more people moving to
the suburbs, the story of AJC
Will have to reach a greater
listening audience. In view of the
acute needs resulting from the
crisis in Israel and local capital
needs, Mr. and Mrs. Suburbanite
will be expected to aid our
causes.
We would suggest, only as a
start, that acquaintances can be
made with the many institutions
the campaign supports locally,
nationally and overseas, so that
when you are asked to give and
to work for yourselvei and your
brethren in 1956 you will under-
stand why!
