Matthew Samuels was Bar Mitz- vah recently, an honor which he shares with a good many other Jewish boys. But one thing about that ceremony he does not share with any other boy, anywhere. He is the first ever to be Bar Mitzvah in Japan. It took place in Nagoya. Jon, whose parents came to Nagoya from New York, received his Bar Mitzvah training from Air Force 2nd Lieut. *Lawrence N. Paper, who made the story public in a letter to The Jewish Criterion here. He trained the Bar Mitzvah boy at the request of his parents in eight months, although he had no previous religious training. Lt. Paper had been instru- mental in forming regular serv- iices in Nagoya, where no Jew- ish Chaplain is stationed. In his letter, he described the situation at the first service: "But to my dismay I learned that I was the only one who could read Hebrew fluently. This led the congrega- tion to choose me as their `Rab- bi,' Chazen,"Shamus,' etc." And now, it would appear, "melamed" too. I want a sofa, as I want a friend, upon which I can repose familiarly. If you can't have intimate terms and freedom with one and the other, they are of no good. —Thackeray Sam Rosenblatt, M.C. & His Orchestra Featuring Margaret Carter Renowned Vocalist Presents Highlighted Entertain- ment For Your Wedding or Bar Mitzvah. — Many References.
