New 'Man on Horseback'
Battle Between
General, ADL
BY MILTON FRIEDMAN
WASHINGTON-A leading
American military personality
has emerged as the newest dar
ling of the lunatic fringe. He is
Lt. Gen. George E. Stratemeyer
who served with distinction in
World War II and Korea.
A battle between the General
and the Bnai Brith Anti-Defama-
tion League has erupted publicly.
The ADL is asking if Strate-
meyer will be the kind of "man
on horseback" that the bigots of
the 19.30's envisaged in another
retired General, George V a n
Horn Moseley.
In 1954 Stratemeyer made
headlines when he became chair-
man of a pro-McCarthy group,
the "Committee of Ten Million."
Shortly thereafter he became
preoccupied with a book by a
Texas professor, John Beaty, en-
titled "Iron Curtain Over Amer-
ica."
The ADL described the Beaty
book as "A compilation of anti-
Jewish lies and distortions
which have caused it to be-
come a kind of primer for 'lu-
natic fringe groups throughout
the nation." But to Gerald L.
K. Smith-it is "The greatest of
its kind ever to appear in
print."
Beaty characterized American
Jews as a minority "obsessed
with its own objectives, which
are not those of Western civiliza-
tion." He said "the secret and
overseas" plots of Soviet Russia
"have been entrusted principally
to Jews" and that the Jews were
responsible for World War II.
The lengthy book was described
by one reviewer as the most ex-
tensive single compilation of anti-
Semitic propaganda to appear in
the world since the defeat of
Nazi Germany in 1945.
But Stratemeyer was so moved
by the book he wrote a fan let-
ter to the author. Stratemeyer
told Beaty, in part: "I congratu-
late you on your book and the
service you have performed for
our country. If my health would
permit it I would go on a con-
tinuous lecture tour gratis and
preach your book and recom-
mendations." •
This autumn the Gerald L. K.
Smith hate organization began
distributing quantities of a flyer
bearing the General's endorse-
ment of "Iron Curtain Over
America." The printed matter
said the book exposed Jewish
"control of our political parties
and many of our cultural and
educational organizations - even
churches."
The new hate material came
to the ADL's attention. Did
Stratemeyer know his name
was being used by professional
anti - Semites? A D L national
chairman Henry' . E. Schultz
wrote Stratemeyer to find out.
7 Replying to the ADL, Strate-
meyer asked: "Who are you and
your organization to tell me what
I should read and what I should
recommend other loyal American
citizens to read? . . . Not until I
read John Beaty's book 'Iron Cur-
tain Over America' did I learn
what was going on back in the
United States of America while
I was overseas fighting for my
country . . Your letter is the
most outrageous communication
I have ever received in my
life . . . "
Schultz answered Stratemeyer,
defending the ADL position, and
expressing hope that the General
would soon "realize that your
years of service to this nation are
too precious to be sullied by any
aid or comfort given, albeit -un-
wittingly, to our enemies-those
who seek to divide us and to set
man against his neighbor."
The ADL feels the General
must now decide whether he be-
longs with George Van Horn Prepare Israel Liner
