CONFECTIONERY

The typical case which is
brought up in the Jewish re-
sponsa such as those of the
Chasam Sofer, deals with the
general question as to whether
an orphan is allowed to say Kad-
dish for the one who raised him
after he became an orphan. The
tendency is to refer to the state-
ment in the Talmud (Babli, San-
hedrin, 19,) which states that he.
who raises a child, (even though
he is not the natural parent) is
considered by the Scriptures as if
he had given birth to him. The
general feeling is that an "adopt-
ed", child owes its foster parent
the respect that one owes to his
natural parents. It was, however,
mentioned' in one of the decisions
of the Chasam Sofer that those
in the' synagogue reciting the
Kadish for their natural parents
had certain preference and that
in some cases an extra Kadish
was instituted so that the mourn-
er for foster parents could fulfill
his obligation without raising a
question of preference or inter-
ference with those who recited it
for their natural parents.

MOSHE SHARETT (right), Foreign Minister of the State of
Israel, is shown just before his return to Israel, receiving a special
leather-bound album from Dr. JOSEPH J. SCHWARTZ, vice-
president of the Israel Bond Organization. The album contains
photographs and newspaper clippings from each of the com-
munities that Mr. Sharett visited in the United States and Canada
in behalf of the State of Israel Development Bond Issue. During
the Israeli Foreign Minister's month-long tour of North American
cities, his appearances spurred record sales of Israel Bonds to
provide investment capital for Israel.

Kashrut and Conception of fioliness
Is Explained by Baltimore Leader

"And ye shall be holy men
unto Me; therefore ye shall not
eat any flesh that is torn of
beasts in the field; ye shall cast
it to the dogs."
The above quotation from
Exodus, 22:30, is cited by Dr.
Nathan Drazin, rabbi of Cong.
Shaarei Tfiloh, in Baltimore,
Md., as a basic consideration. of
Jews to link a number of laws
on kashrut with the concept of
holiness.
In a discourse delivered to the
Sisterhood of his congregation,
Dr. Drazin answered the ques-
tion: "Why do we have to keep
kosher nowadays when we have
sanitation?"
Pointing out that the assump
tion that the purpose of Jewish
dietary laws -
sanitation a n d
hygienics alone-
is fallacious, Dr.
Drazin says that
numerous rea-
sons have been
advanced f o r
Kashrut regula-
tions.
He uses the
quotation from
Dr. Drazin
Exodus as the basis for his state-
ment that, "Holiness involves
separation. A holy man is sepa-
rated and removed from all that
is mundane and vulgar in life.
He is also one who practices
self-restraint.
- "The Jewish dietary laws that
restrict indulgence and that set
us apart from the nations of
the world have in that manner
made us a holy people."
Kashrut, he adds, has also
existed:
1. To preserve national iden-
tity by serving as a natural
barrier against assimilation;
2. For spiritual and moral rea-
sons, such as cruelty to animals
which is not to be practiced;
3. For mystical reasons, in-
cluding the story of Jacob's
sinew wherein _he was confronted
with an adversary who touched
the' hollow of Jacob's thigh, caus-
ing him to limp btft only till
dawn when the sun shone.
4. As a divine law, which
serves many purposes, as op-
posed to a man-made law which
generally serves but one pur-
pose.
5. For hygienic reasons.
In the latter point, Dr. Drazin
claims that up until a few years

ago, doctors scoffed at the ritual
of circumcision and its reputed
sanitary value. Now the prac-
tice is known to aid not only
in diminishing cases of venereal
disease, but also in cancer.
He claims that, who is to know,
what other practices Jews have
adopted might also prove to be
as helpful in abetting sanitation
and hygiene.
In conclusion, Dr. Drazin states,
"The Kashrut laws have never
been a fetish or a fad of .a pass-
ing moment for our people. They
have been God-given laws to be
observed wherever the Jew may
find himself. They serve God's
own good purposes, whatever
they may be. These laws en-
dure today; 'they will endure
forever."

Indemnification Claims

MUNICH, (JTA) - The Bavar-
ian Parliament has appointed'
new officers of the "Advisory
Council on Indemnification," an
institutibn that checks on the
progress of indemnification for
individual Nazi victims and on

mental agencies concerned with
the administration of the pro-
gram.
The new officers of the Council
include two representatives of
the Jewish community, Prof.
Baruch Graubard and Edmund
Jonas, a banker. Of the officers
who are' members of Parliament,
five belong to the Christian
Social Union, four to the Social
Democratic Party, two to the
Bavarian Party, one each to the

refugee party. Among the
Christian Social Union members

Hartford Dedicates New
Hebrew Home For Aged

HARTFORD, Conn., (JTA)---

The new $1,600,000 Hebrew
Home for the Aged was for-
mally dedicated here. At the
same time, the building's three
wings were also named formally.
Two identical wings for am-
bulatory patients will be known
as the Rapaport and Suisman
wings, while a three-story facil-
ity for the chronically ill will be
called the Moses Fox Wing.

- In a case where a man has left
no sons the authorities have
sanctioned the privilege of hiring
someone to say Kadish for the
deceased. Under certain condi-
tions it is proper, according to
some authorities, for a son to hire
someone to study appropriate
Jewish texts in memory of the
deceased and to recite the Kadish
after the study. It is mentioned
that the famous "Shlomo Kluger"
left word before he died that a
righteous and saintly man be
hired to say Kadish for him and
study his books. The later rabbis
were insistent that the practice
of hiring one to say Kadish be
limited to cases where no son
was left to exercise this obliga-
tion.
* • *
Is is customary for a father

to say Kadish for. his son?
It is generally agreed that

a

father may say the Kadish for
his son, should the son die before
the father. According to "'some
authorities if it were the older
son who passed away, the young-
er brothers should say Kadish
for him, if the father has no ob-
jection to his sons reciting Ka-
dish during his lifetime. In such
cases a qualified rabbi should be
consulted.

Stephen Wise Award
Goes to Elmer Davis

WASHINGTON, (JTA)-Elmer
Davis, one of the nation's lead-
ing newspapermen, was honored
at the National Press Club here
for his efforts on behalf of civil
liberties. The American Jewish
Congress presented Davis with
the 1954 Stephen Wise Award.
Sen. Herbert H. Lehman, who
presented the award, warned of
the "damage already done" to
civil liberties despite the decline
of Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy. He
stressed the "need for continued
vigilance."
Lehman said: "We Jews have
learned out of a long history that
antedates by many centuries the
Arherican experience that no as-
pect of freedom and no basic
rights can be yielded by any in-
dividual or group of individuals
without endangering the free-
dom and basic rights of all."
