Palestine-Arab Refugees
Map Propaganda Plans

•VIENNA, (JTA)'—A group of
Arab refugees from • Palestine
met in Linz to discuss the prob-
lems of the refugees and to plan
for the spreading of Egyptian
propaganda in Europe.
The 40 delegates, most of whom
are students, came from Munich,
Vienna, Graz, Zurich arid Geneva.
They were addressed by Hamdi,
Kernel Sukhon, who identified
himself as the "leader" of the
700;000 refugees and who urged
that every medium be used for
spreading Egyptian propaganda
throughout Central Europe.
He was followed by Dr. H.
Fenner, former Nazi press chief
for Upper Austria, who spoke of
the development of trade rela-
tiOns between Austria and the
.Arab states.
The Federal Chamber of
commerce here has advised
Austrian merchants intending
to visit the Arab states to take
baptism al certificates with
them, lest they be suspected of
Jewish.
The warning pointed out that
Arab firms have been strictly ob-
serving regulations forbidding
them to trade with foreign firms
which also have dealings with
Israel enterprises or with firms
Ncrhich are even "suspected" of
being Jewish. The Chamber of
Commerce warning also noted
that the Arabs are checking as to
whether the principals of foreign
firms are of Jewish origin.

Chess Star Herman Steiner
Dies After California, Match

By BILL WOLF

(Copyright, 1955, JTA, Inc.)

- The chess world has lost one of
its best known personalities with
the death of Herman Steiner at
the age of 50.
Steiner suffered a fatal heart
attack after playing in the Cali-
fornia State Chess Championship
tournament in Los Angeles.
Last summer Steiner treveled
to Moscow to compete with the
American chess squad against the
Russian team. At the time of his
death he was chess editor for the.
Los Angeles Times, as well as
being one of the top players in
the country. • He held the U. _ S.
title from 1948 to 1951.
Steiner was born in Hungary
and came to_ - this country when
he was a boy. In 1929 he became
the New York state champion,
and' he achieved renown for his
partici p a t i o .ri in international
tournaments.

Also in the chess world, Jew-
ish player Vassily Sinyslov of
Russia won the international
tournament held in Zagreb. He
competed against 21 contenders,
and as ;was expected, he emerged,
victorious. He was undefeated
through the entire tourney. Smy-
slov is regarded as one of the top -
players in the world.

Walk, the colorful event that was
held in New York. Laskau made
it in 1:23.27. The course was 101/2
miles stretching from City Hall
in Manhattan to .. Coney. Island.
Laskau, finished fourth.

It doesn't seem to take Dolph
Schayes long to get down to work
on-the basketball court. The fact
that he doesn't play a whole game
doesn't mean that he won't man-
age to score more than his share
of points. In a recent contest
with the New York Knicks, the
Syr _ acuse court star played only
25 minutes. Yet he tallied 19
points to emerge with high scor-
ing honors for the. game.

Charley Goldman, the famous
trainer of world heavyweight
champion Rocky Mercian°, was
honored at a dinner held by the
Veteran Boxers Association of
New York. A gift was presented
him for outstanding service to
boxing. Fittingly,. it was Marci-
ano who presented the gift.
It was some 40 years ago that
Goldman himself was in the ring
as a bantamweight fighter. His
training of Marciano is recognized
as a major factor in the ability
of the champion.
