Three Temples to Launch Combined
Drive for Reform Causes on Jan. .5

Statler Hotel, will launch • the
annual combined campaign for
American Reform Judaism,
under the auspices of the three
Reform congregations, Temple
Beth El, Temple Erna-nu-El and
Temple Israel.
The guest speaker will be Wal-
ter W. Weismann, New York in-
dustrialist who is chairman of
the board of the Aetna Indus-
trial Corporation. Mr. Weismann
is a vice chairman of the national
combined campaign, a member
of the executive board of the
Union of American Hebrew Con-
gregations, and the largest in-

The Detroit drive is part of a
nation-wide campaign being con-
ducted in more than 500 Ameri-
can cities for $2,397,000 to main-
tain the national institutions of
Reform Judaism in the United
States, the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations, parent
body of 520 Reform Jewish con-
gregations in this country, and
Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion, the oldest
Jewish theological seminary- in
the United States,
Chairmen of the local Com-
bined Campaign are Dr. Richard
C. Hertz, Rabbi Minard Klein,
Dr. Leon Fram, Rabbi M. Rob-
ert Syme and Dr. Frank F. Ros-
enthal. Benjamin Wilk, president
of Temple Beth El; Louis H.
Schostak, president of Temple
Israel, and Benjamin Goldstein,
president of Temple Emanu-El,
are vice chairmen.

A highlight of the program
will be the showing of a recent
television film—"Kasrilivke on
the Mississippi"—produced by
the Seminary for NBC's "Fron-
tiers of Faith" series.

The guest speaker, a Semin-
ary graduate, was the youngest
Zionist Organization of America
delegate to the post-war World
Zionist Congress in Basle. When
Dr. Abba Hillel Silver was
chairman of the American Zion-
ist Council, he was special
executive assistant in charge of
the Young Zionist - Actions Com-
mittee. He is a former national
president of Masada and - was
chairman of the ZOA Halutziot
Commission, 1948-50.

He is a member of the ZOA
national executive committee,
and of the executive council of
America, and is chairman of the
the Rabbinical Assembly of a
newly-created Commission to
Study the Fundamental Prob-
lems of American Zionism.

A second event in the offing
by the Men's Club is a concert of
cantorial music on Jan. 8 by
world renowned Cantor Moshe
Koussevitsky, accompanied by
Julius Chajes.

His program, to be held in the
synagogue, will include Hebrew
and Yiddish folk songs as well
as cantorial chants, said Nicholas
Lazar, Men's Club president.

College Professors on Acadeinicians
Committee for Mizrachi Bar-Ilan Fete

Announcement was made this
week of the formation of an Aca-
demicians' Committee, in connec-
tion with the annual banquet of
Mizrachi Organization of Detroit.
This year'S banquet, to be held
on Wednesday evening, Jan. 18,
at Latin Quarter, is being dedi-
cated to Mizraohi's Bar-Ilan Uni-
versity in Israel.
