Propose Berdugo
For Moroccan Post

CASABLANCA, (JTA) - Jews
in the city of Meknes sent 200
telegrams to Premier Bekkai ask-
ing him to name David Berdugo,
a Meknes Jew, to the seat in the
Moroccan Cabinet being held for
a Jewish representative.
Berdugo is the son of the presi-
dent of the Meknes Jewish Com-
munity. A delegation of Meknes
Jews left at the same time for
Rabat to personally press this ap-
peal with the Premier.
Their action is aimed at put-
ting an end to the internal dis-
pute which developed among
Moroccan Jews when M. Ben
Simon, a Moroccan Jewish leader,
was named to a post in the first
autonomous Moroccan Cabinet.
Objections from the Jewish
community prevented B e n
Simon's appointment and the post
remains vacant, held for a Jew-
ish candidate.

Herut Seeks Union
With the Centrists

(Direct JTA Teletype. Wire to
The Jewish News)

TEL AVIV - Herut, Israel's
farthest right party and second
strongest in the country, has
made a bid for merger with the
Centrist General Zionists, it was
disclosed here Tuesday by Herut
and confirmed by General Zion-
ist leader Dr. Peretz Bernstein.
A letter by Menahem Beigin,
head of Herut, to Dr. Bernstein.,
noted that General Zionists have
come a long way in the direction
of Herut policy, as for example
the recent series of articles in
the newspaper Haboker by Dr.
Bernstein, advocating considera-
tion of a preventive war now be-
fore the Arabs muster greater
military strength.
Mr. Beigin said he understood
that differing views on economic
and social problems were held
by the two- parties, but insisted
that for a long time to come these
would have to be submerged in
the face of more pressing politi-
cal and security questions on
which the two groups are now
near agreement.
Such a merger, the Beigin let-
ter continued, would create a
large public body which would
strive to change both the politi-
cal and security situation of the
state.
Dr. Bernstein refused to com-
ment on the letter, other than
confirming its receipt, stating it
was a matter which must first
be considered by his party before
he would comment.

ceive the deceiver. -La Fontaine
