more than five feet, three inches.
Adolph Ochs, publisher of the
New York Times, was a small
man, too, physically.

More than 250 educators and social scientists paid tribute to
Dr. Salo W. Baron, internationally-known historian and professor
of Jewish History at- Columbia Vniversify, at a dinne--, held in New
York by the Conference on Jewish Social Studies.' The event
marked Dr. Baron's sixtieth birthday. Watching Professor Baron

Jewish Leaders in Morocco
Split on Cabinet Candidate

A delegation of Moroccan
Jews today had' an audience
with the Sultan of Morocco
and asked him to appoint the
Jewish member of the Cabinet
for whom the pest of Ministry
of Posts and Telegraphs has
been left open. The delegation
assured the Sultan that whom-
ever he chooses will be accept-
able to all the Jews of Mo-
rocco.

CASABLANCA, Morocco,
(JTA)—A representative of Mo-
rocco's 300,000 Jews will sit in
the newly formed Moroccan
Cabinet, but sharp- differences of
opinion within the Jewish com-
munity have prevented the nam-
ing of the specific Cabinet minis-
te ,, who will perform that func-
tion.
The naming of a Jewish rep-
resentative would imply the re-
versal of long-standing Moroccan
policy under which the Jews
were virtually without rights, and
lived under sufferance as "pro-
teges" of the Sultan.

chain of newspapers in the old
tradition. Owner of the Port-
land Oregonian, and of Long

quired an Alabama daily.

NEW YORK (JTA) — West
Hooker, film-television promoter,
and his two companies, accused
of anti-Semitic activities, have
been enjoined from dealing in
securities in New York State.

A temporary injunction against
West Hooker Film Network and
the Master Television Corp. was
granted by Supreme Court Jus-
tice Joseph A. Gavagan.
Charges against Hooker and
his two companies brought by
Special Deputy Attorney General
David Clurman included an alle-
gation that a prospectus had been
issued misrepreSenting the
amount of money raised and
using, without their knowledge,
the names of General Douglas
MacArthur and other prominent
persons.
Hooker, who said earlier that
he was trying to get "Christian
influence" into television, con-
tended that the 'charges of anti-
SemitiSm were part of a "smear
campaign" against him. He had
'once denied anti-Semitism with
a statement that he was, how-
ever, anti-Jewish to the extent
that Judaism was anti-Christian.

A small man has got to make-
up for it in some way. The Bible
doesn't say too much about the
size of people. We don't know
whether Moses was big or small.
Heine says that when Moses
stood on Mt. Sinai, it was Moses
who was a mountain, but Heine
was not thinking in terms of
physique. The Bible does say
that Saul, the first king of Israel,
was a very tall man. He prob-
ably was selected, in part, be-
cause of his height. David was
not so large, but he went up'

ROMEDARY

Morocco, at a meeting in Rabat,

described the Council of Moroc-
can Jewish Communities as a
"body Without legal standing,"
responsible exclusively for co-
ordination of welfare activities.
The rabbis, who include spiri-
tual leaders from the largest
Jewish centers in Morocco as
well as the grand rabbis of the
High Rabbirlical Tribunal,
claimed that the Council had im-
properly proclaimed itself as rep-
resenting the political interests of
Moroccan Jewry.
They urged that political prob-
lems be dealt with by a central
coordinating committee repre-
senting all major Jewish or-
ganizations in Morocco.
The WJC also reported that the
Association des Anciens Eleves
(alumni) of the Alliance Israelite
Universelle had similarly de-
clared in a resolution that "the
Council of Moroccan Jewish
Communities is a non-political
body and has no qualifications
Whatsoever to represent Moroc-
can Jewry." It revealed that the
Jewish Community of Fez, second
largest community in Morocco,
has withdrawn from the Council.
The Jews of Morocco, had _
heretofore the most 'under-
privileged Jewish community
in North Africa. They did- not
enjoy the same rights as Mos-
lems, since they were judged
according to 'the Islamic law,
which is essentially religious.
Deeds prepared by Jewish
notaries had no validity, and a
Jew's oath was not recognized.
The Jews were excluded from all
posts in Moroccan administration,
except that of Inspector of Jew-
ish Education and Institutions.
Earlier, a resolution proposing
that Moroccan Jews be granted
all political and civil rights, in-
cluding the right to vote, was
adopted at a three-day congress
of Moroccan nationalist leaders
at Rabat.
The resolution also called for
the Jews to be represented in all
Moroccan legislative bodies and
to have free access to all activi-
ties in the Moroccan state.
Another resolution adopted at
the congress, which demanded a
free and democratic Morocco,
would grant equality of treat-
ment to all citizens, regardless of
race or religion.
The Paris press reported from
Morocco that Sultan Sidi Mo-
hammed ben Youssef, in his
search for educated young Mo-
roccans to place in executive
positions in the new administra-
tion, has discovered that two-
thirds of the available candi-
dates are Jews, it was reported
in the Paris press this week.
The report said that a list of
young Moroccans with baccalau-
reate degrees, compiled at the
Sultan's request, had 296 names
on it, at least 200 of whom are
Jews.
Another report from Morocco
said that a Jew was killed and
four others were injured in the
Moroccan town of Taourirt, near
Oujda. The dispatch said the
Jews were victimized when two
shops owned by Jews were at-
tacked by a Moslem mob.

General Joe Wheeler who
fought in the Civil War and

mite of a man. Once a sergeant
came into General Wade's tent
looking for Wheeler. "He was

"and I didn't see him go out.
