`Frontier' TV Program
To Portray Pioneer
Of New Mexico

-

A little-known aspect of the
history of the -Jews in America
serves as the basis for a dramatic
television program on "Frontier,"
over the National Broadcasting
Company TV network at 7:30
p.m. Sunday (WWJ-TV, Channel
4, in Detroit).
The half-hour drama, "Ferdi-
nand Meyer's Army," will be
seen in an appropriate season, for
it has the Hanukah spirit of .a
people fighting for their homes
and land against cruel oppressors.
Dealing with a rare theme for a
popular television show, "Ferdi-
nand Meyer's Army" is the story
of one of the first Jews to settle
in New Mexico.
Set in 1871 in the territory
known as Sangre- de Cristo Land
Grant, the drama tells the stir-
ring tale of Ferdinand Meyer, a
fur trader who was elected by
Mexican peons to lead them in
defending their lands and lives
against eastern land-grabbers.
"Ferdinand Meyer's Army" was
written by Morton Fine and
David Friedkin, who are the au-
thors of the enetire "Frontier"
series, which Worthington Miner
is producing under the sponsor-
ship of the Reynolds Metals
Company.
In "Ferdinand Meyer's Army,"
Richard Karlan enacts the title
role. Others in the cast are Jack'
Elam, Leo Gordon, Argentina
Brunetti and Herbert Butterfield.
John Brahm is the director.
In one • scene, Meyer refers to
the arrival in a near-by village
of a Mr. Goldenstern, comment-
ing, "He made the tenth man for
our minyon. Would you believe
it, there are ten Jews now in this
territory." The territory, it should
be added, consised of thousands
of square miles.
