The Suburban Commtmity

Theory of Relativity:
Lathes versus Pancakes

By the Oak-Woodser
"Out of the frying pan, and
into the fire"—that's an expres-
sion dating back several cen-
turies, but it best describes only
one of a series of minor setbacks
which plagued a young house-
wife here during the past week
of Hanukah.
Determined that Hanukah
would • include everything that
her husband has been used to,
our newly-wed suburb an it e
houseivife set about the task of
making potato latkes.
She peeled and peeled and
grated and grated—three batches
of potatoes were prepared and
subsequently thrown out. In des-
peration, she made a quick call
to mama.

Crying into the phone, our
suburban bride bitterly ex-
plained to her mother that she
didn't want to call her — she
wanted to make the. latkes all
by herself.'

"But how, mama, do you keep
the potatoes from turning
black?"
After mama reassured her that
all potatoes turned black when
they're grated—it just can't, be
helped—she added a few other
details which enabled our bride
to prepare the batter.
Despite a few cuts from peel-
ing and some. skinned knuckles
from grating, the batter was now
ready to go into the frying pan.
. The first side went remark-
ably well; but the turning could
have been easier, as a couple of

the latkes went into the flames
and some additional ones on the
floor.
Then came the familiar key at
the door. OUr young husband en-
tered and sniffed vigorOusly at
the delightful aroma of freshly=
made latkes. Even the burnt
ones didn't throw him off the
scent.
Our bride greeted her bride-
groom at the door with the ex-
clamation, "Dear, I have a sur-
prise for you." Grinning to him-
self, he replied, "Tell me what
is it?"

"You'll have to wait and
. see," •she said, as she reached
for the Menorah and lit the
first candle of Hanukah to
usher in their first holiday to-
gether.

Into the dining room they
marched. While she went into
the kitchen, she asked him' to
close his eyes and prepare for
the surprise which was to come.

On instruction, the' young
bridegroom downed every last
latke on his plate, he tactfully
suggested, "Maybe next time
we'll try sour crearri.".
"Sour cream!" She looked hor-
rified. "Who ever uses sour
cream on pancakes?" Which
only goes to show that every-
thing is relative, especially be-
tween a bride and her bride-
groom.

JERUSALEM — Dr. Nahum
Goldmann, chairman of the Jew-
ish Agency, reported here Tues-
day that the outlook for the
United Jewish' Appeal drive and
for the campaign of the Israel
Bond Organization is very good
in the United States. He spoke
at , a meeting of the Jewish
Agency Executive.
Dr. Goldmann also reported
that the Zionist movement in the
U. S. is developing its public
relations activities. He stressed
the importance of Foreign Minis-
ter Moshe Sharett's visit to the
U. S. and dwelt on the possibility
of the sale of arms by the U. S.
government to Israel.
The Jewish Agency chairman
revealed that presidents of major
Jewish organizations in the
United States are jointly calling
a conference in Washington to
discuss American-Israel relations.
More than 400 leading American
Jews from all parts of the coun-
try have been invited to attend
the conference, which will take
place the middle of next month,
Dr. Goldmann reported.
