Israeli Refuses Medal
Of Austrian Government

VIENNA (JTA)—Arieh Eshel,
Israel's retiring consul in Vienna,
refused to accept an Austrian gov-
ernment medal, on the grounds
that Israel diplomatic protocol
forbids acceptance of foreign dec-
orations.
Eshel paid his farewell visit
to Premier Julius Raab before
returning to Israel where he will
head the Eastern European De-
partment of the Foreign Ministry.
Foreign Minister Leopold Figl
tendered a reception in his honor
and presented Mr. Eshel with a
silver cup. The medal was offered -
in view of his services in improv-
ing of Austrian-Jewish relations.

Hike Restoration Fund
Of Touro Synagogue

NEW YORK (JTA)—The ex-
pansion of a fund for the restora-
tion of the Touro Synagogue of
Newport, R.I., the oldest syna-
gogue building in the country,
from $50,000 to $300,000, was an-
nounced by the Touro Synagogue
Restoration Committee.
The additional funds will be
sought to create a park area in
front of the structure, one of the
finest examples of colonial archi-
tecture. A number of nearby
buildings will be purchased by
the committee. The synagogue
was established as a National
Historic Site in 1946.

permitting Israel to obtain arms
and a mutual security pact with
the United States was adopted at
the inaugural convention of the

Eden's Generosity,
An Old Wive's Tale

By DAVID SCHWARTZ

(Copyright, 1955, JTA, Inc.)

The Jerusalem Post, comment-
ing on Mr. Eden's proposal that
peace might be made by Israel
giving Egypt some of the Negev,
says his act recalls the old Jew-
ish story about the rabbi who
was dying. Members of his con-
gregation gathered about the
open Ark. One member of the
congregation pleaded with God
to spare the life of the rabbi,
offering in return that he would
give one year of his own life if
God would spare the rabbi for
another year. Another member
of the 'congregation offered God
a better bargain. He could take
two years of his life if He would
but spare the rabbi for two years.
A third member offered to do-
nate 15 years on this basis.
The others were aghast.
"How?" they asked the third
member, "can you give 15 years
of your life? You are not so
young yourself. If you give 15
years, you will have only a few
years left!"
"Don't worry," said the man,
"I am not giving 15 years of my
life. I am giving my wife's."
Mr. Eden can afford to be gen-
erous on a similar basis. He is
not giving his own. He is giving
Israel's. Of his own, he is not
so generous. Take Cyprus for
instance. He is not giving any of
that away.
If we recall correctly, it was
Mr. Eden who organized the Arab
League, which has not been too
good a thing • even for England.
If England under him becomes a
Garden of Eden, all. we can say
is, that it is not what it is
cracked up to be.

to implement it by enabling the
Republic of Israel to obtain arms
and all other means necessary
for the maintenance of its ter-
ritorial integrity and national
independence.
"The best interests of our
country and the need's of world
peace and social progress de-
mand that our Government enter
into a mutual security pact with
Israel. Such a pact would be
strictly defensive in character
and would not be aimed at any
neighbor of Israel.
"Such an American-Israel Mu-
tual Security Pact might well
serve as the model for similar
accords between our country and
the Arab lands, thus paving the
way for a Middle East Mutual
Security Treaty Organization,
embracing all of the nations in
this pivotal area,, within the
framework of the UN and dedi-
cated to the furtherance of
world peace and human well-
being."
Prior to the resolution's adop-
tion the convention heard from
Rabbi Israel Goldstein who spoke
on difficulties being faced by
Israel as a result of the Czech-
Egyptian arms deal.
Earlier, Walter Reuther, presi-
dent of the merged AFL-CIO,
reported on his recent visit to
Israel. Mordecai Namir, general
secretary of Histadrut, the Israel
Federation of Labor, was among
the convention guests.
