But I remember a Hanukah just 65 years ago, one that was a time of sadness. I was nine years old then. Byalistok was my home. Our home was built around the shul, as was every Jewish home; and our lives revolved around the rabbi. And what a rabbi he was. Reb Chaim Shmuel Lipschitz, a true leader of his people. Every shab- bos he gave a drasha, a drasha that was understood by, and in- spiring to all. Today was Shabbos Mivorchim and tonight we would light the first candle of Hanukah. I was standing in shul, holding my father's hand when I felt an uneasiness come over me. I glanced around and noticed that this uneasiness had effected everyone. Something was wrong, but I didn't know what. By some instinct I felt that the uneasiness was emanating from Reb Chaim. I looked at him— a small man who walked with a slight limp caused by childhood polio, which he barely survived. But when he sat hunched over his ancient sforim, his eyes shown, and he seemed a giant. That was our rabbi. Still I felt uneasy. My forebod- ing was confirmed when Reb Chaim didn't give his usual drasha. We weren't to find out what was the matter until after shab- bos, when the shammos banged on the bimah, and said that the rabbi had a few words for us. And then we learned the awful truth. Reb Chaim's greatest pleasure was henceforth to be denied him. He could no longer drink in the words of our holy Torah. God had taken the light from his eyes. Reb Chaim was blind. We lit our Hanukah licht that night with a new understanding and appreciation of the flicker- ing light, a light that our eyes were able to see. We lit our licht with a new understanding, and a new heaviness in our heart. Israel. Cites 23 Acts Of Egyptian Aggression UNITED NATIONS, N. Y. (JTA)—Egypt has committed 23 acts of aggression and espionage against Israel since the Nitzana cease-fire went into effect on Nov. 4, while nine sabotage at- tacks against Israel were carried out during the same period by Egyptian "fedayeen" operating out of Jordan, according to an Israel complaint filed with the Security Council here. The complaint was in the form of a three-page letter handed to Nasrollah Entezam of Iran, this month's president of the Council, by Mordecai R. Kidron, deputy chairman of the Israel delegation to the United Nations. Without calling for a meeting of the Security Council on the issue, but merely requesting of the Council president that he cir- culate the letter among the 10 other members of the Council, Kidron pointed out that "the nature, frequency and wide range of these acts of aggression dem- onstrate the patent insincerity of Egyptian professions of peaceful intent, and the contempt in which Egypt holds its international commitments." And There Was Light Violinist Mischa Elman, who returned to Israel for a series of concerts, tells about the poor, blind woman in Tel Aviv who put ten dollars into a collection plate at a - synagogue. "You can- not afford so much," said one. "Yes, I can," she answered. On being pressed to explain, she said, "I am blind and I said to my fellow straw-workers, 'How much money do you spend in a year for oil in your lamps when it is too dark to work nights?' They replied, ten dollars.' "So," said the poor woman, "I found that I save so much in the year because I am blind and do not need a lamp, and I give it to shed light in the dark minds."
