over various disturbing events in
Germon public life whose simi-
larity with events preceding the
Nazi seizure of power was noted.
The Jewish communities are no
longer viable by themselves, the
Council indicated in an appeal for
greater consideration from gov-
ernmental quarters.
With regard to the indemnifi-
cation of individual Nazi- victims,
the present slate of affairs—ten
years after the collapse of Nazism
—was described as intolerable.
The Council urged an increase
in the staffs processing the appli-
cations of Nazi victims. It also
demanded that, in addition to the
present financial arrangements
compensation for bodily injury
should be paid to those victims
of Nazi medical experimenfs
who were sterilized or who suf-
fered the loss of a limb, an eye,
etc.

Seeks Witnesses
From Landsberg

A Detroit resident this week
is seeking witnesses who were
imprisoned at the concentration
camp at Landsberg, Bavaria, a
part of the Dachau Concentra-
tion Camp during the Nazi
regime.
Bernard Offen, now a citizen
of this country and a veteran of
the Korean War, in filing a Ger-
man Indemnification Claim for
his imprisonnient at Landsberg,
was told witnesses were. neces-
sary to substantiate the claim,
despite his own records of im-
prisonment.
The Landsberg Concentration
Camp was only a few miles from
Landsberg Prison where Nazi
leaders were executed following
their convictions at Nuremberg..
While in the concentration
camp, Offen says, there was a
prisoner of war from Chicago,
a Unlited States Navy enlisted
man who was separated from
other prisoners of war because
he was a Jew. During the years,
he has lost contact with the man
concerned.
Those who might be able to
serve as witnesses or who might
supply information are urged to
contact Offen at TO. 7-3655 or
TO. 8-6617.

A new procedure for the care
of the aged in their own homes
has been worked out in Italy by
the Joint Distribution Commit-
tee, with the co-operation of the
United Nations High' Commis-
sioner for Refugees and the
United States Escapee Program,
it was announced by Moses W.
Beckelman, JDC director-general
for overseas operations.
Thirty Jewish refugees, aver-
aging 70 years of age, will from
now on receive monthly grants
of 10,000 lire each from an Italian
insurance company, to whom one-
time premiums of $1,600 for each
,person insured were paid by the
three organizations. The USEP
paid the full premiums for ten
of the aged who were eligible for
help under that agency's pro-
gram. The cost of premiums for
the other twenty was shared
jointly by the UNHOR and JDC.
The monthly grants for the
thirty aged beneficiaries will be
paid for life, Mr. Beckelman
pointed out.
