Detroit Jews Asked to Remain at Home Sunday
To Welcome Volunteers on National Action Day

Appeals in Behalf of Israel
Bond Drive by Stollman, Allan

In an appeal to all members
of Detroit's Jewish community
to remain home on Sunday, Dec.
11, Norman Allan, Grand Mar-
shal of National Action Day in
Israel, called attention to the
special Israel Bond campaign on
that day, The concerted one-
day effort, which will be ob-
served simultaneously through-
out the country, will consist of
a house-to-house canvass by vol-
unteers seeking subscriptions for
State of Israel Development
Bonds.
In issuing his call, Mr. Al-

Ian reported that preparations
for National Action Day for
Israel in this community are
completed. "Our volunteers
are eagerly awaiting the start
of the campaign this Sunday
morning," he asserted. Through-
out the United States, thou-
sands of volunteer Israel Bond
salesmen will be ringing door-
bells on National Action Day
for Israel, telling their friends
and neighbors the latest news
of Israel's economic situation
and of its urgent need for in-
vestment capital through Is-

rael Bonds. In order to imple-
ment Israel's policy of unre-
stricted immigration, which in
the immediate future will re-
sult in the absorption of some
50,000 harassed North Afri-
can Jews, Israel Bond sales
must be maintained at a high
level."
Mr. Allan underscored the
role of Israel Bond proceeds in
the absorption of hundreds of
thousands of Jewish immigrants
who arrived in Israel since 1948.
As a result, he added, Israel has
been able to build new factories
and to man them with skilled
workers, and to mechanize and
irrigate farms. He pointed out
that continued Israel Bond aid
is essential, if the new wave of
immigrants from North Africa

is to be similarly assimilated in-
to Israel's economic framework.
Mr. Allan emphasized that,
through investments made in Is-
rael Bond Issue, the growth of
Israel's agriculture, commerce
and industry has been made pos-
sible. In addition, he said, Israel
Bond capital has aided in the
exploration and exploitation of
natural r es our c es, including
phosphates, potash, copper and
oil, the building of new roads,
the expansion of Haifa harbor's
capacity and the development of
new sources of electric power.
"The men and women of
Detroit have an opportunity to
demonstrate their friendship
for Israel by staying home this
Sunday, to greet the volun-
teers who will visit them,"

Maccabean Valor:. Louis Lipsky's ad-

'The Diary of Anne Frank'

There is such a ganging up on Israel today that those who are
disturbed over the existing situation have good cause for concern.
The small state has few friends. It is almost completely isolated,
and even the Communist threat to the entire world, resulting from
the invasion of the Middle East by the Soviets, has not aroused
sufficient alarm among the free nations of the world.
Our first thoughts, on the eve of Hanukah, therefore turn to
the home of the first Maccabees, where a new Maccabean spirit is
needed to overcome the difficulties that face the infant state of
Israel.
But it is not Israel alone that is challenged to acquire a revived
Maccabean valor in facing the issues revolving around the very
threat to Israel's existence. American Jewry, Israel's chief pro-
tector, must especially rise to the occasion.
American Jewry's elder statesman, Louis Lipsky, had a rational
and calming message to his co-workers, on his 79th birthday. "This
is no time for panic," said the brilliant leader whose analyses of
Jewish affairs are to this day the most convincing. "You never stop
fighting for liberty," he added.
Lipsky, usually accompanied by his charming wife and one of
his sons (David or Eleazar), has his midnight cup of coffee at
Tiptoe Inn, on 86th Street and Broadway in New York. This res-
taurant was made famous by these visits, because Lipsky's friends
flock there nightly to exchange viewpoints with him.
Your commentator and his wife, long absent from these rendez-
vous sessions, treked to Tiptoe Inn immediately upon their arrival
in New York. This time we were alone with the Lipskys, on the
Zionist statesman's 79th birthday (on Nov. 30). It was only a day
away from the Weizmann Institute dinner, and a number of his
admirers were either out of the city or ill; that was why there were
so few of us with him on his important natal day.
David Lipsky was there, anxiously awaiting the revival of the
play, "The Cradle Song," which he is promoting in New York . All
of them spoke glowingly of the other son and brother, Eleazar,
whose mystery stories have been sold in many hundreds of thousands
of copies; and three of the four of which have been bought by
Hollywood. James Cagney will star in one of them.
This is a long introduction to the few cautious words of a great
leader: "You never stop fighting for liberty." It takes you right
back to the -founders of this great nation. It takes you back to all
the pioneers in Zionism who Were never deterred by setbacks. And
.after you have repeated this solgan, you must say to yourself:
when you keep fighting for liberty, you can't stop believing in it,
and therefore can never lose. That's our Hanukah message to
friends and co-workers: keep fighting for the right, and justice will
triumph.
A Happy Hanukah!

Hanukah Spirit in 'The Diary of Anne Frank'

-

Mr. Allan stated. "I am cer-
tain that National Action Day
for Israel will witness an
outstanding record in Israel
Bond sales in this commun-
ity."

In a special call to the com-
munity, Phillip Stollman, chair-
man of the Detroit Israel Bond
Committee, appealed for volun-
teer workers and stated:

"You can have a key role
in this historic effort for Is-
rael by joining the many vol-
unteers in Detroit who will
bring the facts about Israel's
progress and economic growth
to their friends and neighbors
and give them the opportun-
ity to invest in Israel's future.
Israel must maintain her eco-
nomic strength unimpaired by
the influx of 50,000 Jews who
are on the move in North
Africa, and unhindered by the
continuing hostility of the
Arab states.

By Philip
Slomovitz

Don't miss seeing this soul-stirring play, if in New York or if.
and when it comes here. By keeping alive the memories of sad
times we thereby are strengthened to fight for liberty.

Anna Frank's Attic: Mere Memory

A Dec. 31 JTA cable from Amsterdam reveals that "the old
building in whose attic Anne Frank and her family hid from the
Nazis for several years before being found and deported to their
death, is to be wrecked shortly to make room for a new municipal
development."
Thousands of people visited this building after the publication
of the soul-stirring and heart-rending "Diary of Anne Frank."
The 14-year-old Jewish girl told the story of her own and her
family's experiences in this attic. The diary was found by her
father, the only survivor from the group, that was hidden in this
building, after the defeat of the Nazis.
U only the building could have been retained as a monumental
reminder of the Hitlerite tragedies—so that the memories of it
might inspire people to libertarian .courage in opposition to any
attempt to revive tyranny! Now the book and the play, "The Diary
of Anne Frank," are the only reminders. of the Frank story—the
symbol of the martyrdom of six million Jews.
May the fight for liberty and justice go on unhindered—and
may Hanukah ever serve as a reminder to strivers for justice
never to bend their knees to oppressors.

`Good Morning, Miss Dove'; Good Will Medium

A high quality of fairness is displayed in the film, "Good
Morning, Miss Dove," in which Jennifer Jones gives an excellent
portrayal of an old maid teacher.
In this play, "the terrible Miss Dove" teaches all townspeople
many lessons in true kindness and genuine justice, in spite of her
sternness.
Portrayed in the film is an immigrant boy from Poland, Maurice
Levine, who, when shown a picture of a tiger on the blackboard,
before he had learned English, tells of his personal knowledge of
tigers in a Yiddish speech. It calls forth snickers, the boy is hounded
by his classmates after school hours, and Miss Dove finds a way
of protecting him.
But Miss Dove is conscious of a situation that needs correction,
and she devotes a lesson to Palestine and her people and arranges
an invitation for the class for a meal at Maurice's parents' home,
the immigrants Mr. and Mrs. Harry Levine. Mrs. Levine serves
Jewish food, the "matzo balls" make a hit and the antagonism
towards a stranger is broken.
When the class learned of the party at the Levines, Miss
Dove heard the term "Rabb" applies to Maurice and learned that
it was an abbreviation of "Rabbi" applied to Maurice. The "terrible"
old maid once again emerges the great teacher who explains to
them that Rabbi means teacher, that Jesus whom they worship also
was a teacher and that Maurice had not yet attained the distinction
his class antagonists conferred upon him.
It is a remarkable lesson in good will. "Good Morning, Miss
-Dove" teaches true brotherhood in such effective fashion that those
who seek to spread inter-faith and inter-racial amity will find
this film an excellent guide for their program.

The Hanukah spirit is in evidence in one of the most moving
plays we have ever witnessed: the dramatization of "The Diary
of Anne Frank" (at the Cort Theater in New York).
This sad story of a girl and her diary, of her family, all of
whom had perished in concentration camps except the father who
survived to make the diary public, has many inspiring scenes. The
