Temple Beth El to Remain at Woodward Avenue Site
Will Not Use
22 Acre Tract
At Present Time
Temple Beth El, which three
years ago purchased a possible
suburban building site, will re-
main in its present location,
Woodward at Gladstone, the
board of trustees decided this
week.
Since the purchase, according
to Benjamin Wilk, Temple presi-
dent, the board and several com-
mittees • have carried - out an
evaluation of developments in
present site and prospective
ear the
developments in 'the 22 1/2-acre
tract at James Ciuzens Highway
and PA-Mile Rofd.
The study has disclosed that
the Woodward location satisfac-
torily meets the present needs of
the Congregation, Wilk said.
During the three years, he
added, the congregation has
grown from 1,524 to 1,707 fami-
lies; enrollment in the religious
school has increased to 1,100
children; attendance at services
has increased considerably and
the congregation's program of ac-
tivities has broadened in scope
and participation.
In addition, Wilk pointed out,
construction of the Lodge Ex-
pressway has made a trip to the
temple, even from outlying sub-
urbs, a matter of minutes.
Temple Beth El has been a
Woodward Avenue landmark
since its construction in 1922. It
is estimated it would cost nearly
$5,000,000 to duplicate the pres-
ent facilities.
Designed by the late Albert
Kahn, internationally known De-
troit architect, it was built dur-
ing the ministry of the late Rab-
bi Leo M. Franklin, who served
Beth El for nearly half a cen-
tury.
Present spiritual leader of
Temple Beth El is Rabbi Rich-
ard C. Hertz.
