movement, the seige of the Old
City of Jerusalem, a romance be-
tween an Irishman in the Brit-
ish police and an Israeli beauty,
a visit to a Druse village, an
Israeli's personal victory over a
Nazi fighting with the Arabs, and
an American Jew's spiritual
awakening in the Holy Land. The
film which utilizes English and
Hebrew has a documentary air
in parts, but a melodramatic
flavor generally.
Among the first week's special
audience here were members of
Israel's diplomatic colony. For
those Israelis fraught with
memories, the film's every se-
quence was loaded with emo-
tional appeal. One woman raved:
"That was so exactly how it
was." Another young man per-
sonally involved in the illegal
immigration movement was so
haunted by the film that he pre-
ferred his reverent silence.
Others, not as moved by the
drama, still found the film urgent
and worthy of close attention.
One gentleman recalled good-
naturedly how eagerly his friend
took to the photographing of the
film. Jab went his companion's
elbow! Straight out when his fin-
ger to point to that very spot
where both he and that actor had
courageously performed. Another
young fellow more interested in
lovely ladies than in landscap-
ing, remarked what an eye-full
Haya Hararit is. Miss Hararit
won a Cannes Festival award for
her performance in the film.
More critical observers sug-
gested that the film was "over-
ambitious" and tried to relate too
many incidents. These critics said
an incident involving a Nazi, for
instance, or the romance of the
Irishman and the Israeli girl, or
the visit to the Druse village
were superfluous and not con-
vincing enough. Others thought
that the abiding trouble was not
with any particular incident but
with the script in general. How-
ever, some more patient bystand-
ers were quick to add that the
film represented Israeli's initial
effort and that after all one can't
expect a full grown production
from a new born industry.
The film has been shown in
France, England, the Scandina-
vian countries and now in the
U.S. In Israel audiences lined up
for months and months to see
the film about their country's be-
ginning. Judging from comments
heard here in Washington, the
Israel populace most likely ex-
pressed a similar range of opin-
ions. But make no mistake. "Hill
24 Doesn't Answer" is a film
worth seeing.

"Hill 24 Doesn't Answer"
will be brought to Detroit by
the Studio Theater, Livernois
and Davison, bz:ginning Dec. 15,
for a one-week run.
