THIRTIETH JUBILEE YEAR

U. W. Hillel Incidents
Called Anti-Semitism

MADISON, Wis. (JTA) — At-
tacks on Jewish institutions in
this city including the two most
recent incidents involving the
Hillel Foundation at the Uni-
versity of Wisconsin here have
been termed a "display of anti-
Semitism" by Jewish leaders. The
leaders, who met here, later had
a conference in the office of Mad-
ison's Mayor A. W. Baries, which
was also attended by a Police
Captain and Captain of Detec-
tives. The Mayor, backing recent
police statements on the inci-
dent, continued to refer to the
attacks as examples of "vandal-
ism" and "juvenile _delinquency."
To this contention, the Jewish
leaders noted that the removal
of a 300-pound cornerstone tend-
ed to indicate that it "was some-
thing more than juvenile delin-
quency." It was _also noted that
a Catholic altar and Lutheran
cemetery had been violated. A
meeting of religious and com-
munal leaders will be called to
consider community planning. for
action in this field. It was agreed
that the Hillel Foundation would
be more closely patrolled by po-
lice.
