Through Multi-Faceted Program

Yeshiva University Blends
Jewish, Secular Knowledge

The program of Yeshiva Uni-
versity is directed towards de-
velopment on the American
scene of Jewish laymen for the
professional and business • world,
who are simultaneously steeped
in the knowledge and under-
standing of the sacred heritage
of Judaism.
To do so, its oiler-all program
of studies has attempted to in-
tegrate Jewish studies with Sec-
ular subjects. To that end, it
maintains a College of Liberal
Arts and Sciences, a School of
Education, a College for Women,
and a College of Medicine, in
addition to its religious studies
divisions.

DR. SAMUEL BELHIN

The intensity of its Jewish
training has also served to pro-
vide the Jewish community
with lay and religious leader-
ship. From the ranks of its
Isaac Elchanan Theological Sem-
inary and from its Teachers In-
stitute, have come forward the
most outstanding Jewish lead-
ers today. Their graduates oc-
cupy leading positions in the
Rabbinate, in Zionist move-
ments, in organizations . like
American Jewish Congress and
the like.
Yeshiva was elevated to Uni-
versity status to become the
first accredited American Uni-
versity under Jewish auspices
during the brilliant tenure of
Dr. Samuel Belkin, who brought.
to the presidency of Yeshiva
University the rich blending of
the Talmudic learning of the
long established rabbinic cen-
ters of Europe, enhanced by the
general scholarship and scien-
tific training he acquired at
Brown and Harvard Universi-
ties.
The general philosophy of the
school has paved the way for
the opening of the nation's first
college of medicine under Jew-
ish sponsorship, the Albert EM-
stein College of Medicine at
Eastchester Road and Morris
Park Avenue, Bronx. The Medi-
cal College is the core of a new
$100,000,000 " M.e di c al City"
which includes New York City's
$40,000,000 Br o n x Municipal
Hospital Center, and a $45,-
000,000. Psychiatric Hasp it al
Center to be built by Ntw York
State.

With its main center at Am-
sterdam A v e nu e and 186th
Street, in the Washington
Heights section of New York
City, Yeshiva University also
maintains educational facilities
in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and
mid-town Manhattan. It pro-
vides educational programs in
the arts, sciences and Jewish
learning for 3,000 men and -
women students from all parts
of the United States and some
26 foreign countries who pursue
courses of study leading to 15
different • ,graduate and under-
graduate degrees, from B. A.
through Ph. D.

The development of Yeshiva

our great American Universi-

Princeton, which also started
at theological seminaries and
over the years graduall y
broadened their scope of edu-
