The Middle East's Unholy Alliance

Exposing Barrage

of Lies Against Israel

An unholy alliance is threatening the
peace of the world. Communists and Arabs
are defying the West by packing their pow-
der kegs with dynamite that could start a
war • in the Middle East, but the consequences
of which could well lead to a third world
war.
The - situation -has been made most dif-
ficult for the world's statesmen. Assistant
Secretary of State George V. Allen, who re-
vealed that the Czech-Egyptian arms deal
could run into the $140,000,000 figure, said
that the United States is adopting an anti-
preventive War attitude and that this country
will support any, state that keeps the peace.
What does this. mean. Israel desires to keep
the peace, but she must defend herself, and
she must keep infiltrating Egyptians out of
her territory. - Is self-defense being inter-
preted as failure t6 keep the peace, while
the war-threatening- neighbors are ready to
pounce on. an outnumbered and weaker
Israel? -
Lies after lies are being poured into
print, over the airways and on the lecture
platforms about: Israel's alleged military
superiority. It is this untruth that must be
exposed speedil -Y hi order that those who
strive for fair play, especially our fellow-
citizens in. this great democracy, should not
be misled by the barrage of propaganda now
in evidence.
It is urgent that the truth should be
established because the handful of self-
hating Jews —
- ' Whb have joined the unholy
military alliance in the Middle East have
become partners in a scheme to destroy
Israel. The American Council for Judaism,
a Council that has earned for itself the inter-
pretation of being neither American nor
Jewish nor a Council in the sense that a
council should be democratic, has failed to
take its place with the defenders of the
rights of a people whose very existence is
endangered by Arab threats. One of the
spokesmen for this group, Alfred M. Lilien-
thal, the Washington lawyer who has hob-
nobbed with Arabs while they boasted= that
they were ready to- sacrifice ten millions of
their own people to destroy the million and
a half Israelis, in an address in Hartford,
Conn., is reported to have advocated that
this country should give preference to the
Arabs if there is a choice between them and
Israel. He advocated such a position as the
- , , - and gave
pro-Americanpoint of view"
three reasons for it: that America must side
with the Arabs because of their "strategic
manpower, strategic resources; and strategic
position."
Instead of becoming panicky over such
a shocking advocacy by a Jew, of an anti-
Israel position by our government, let us
look at the record of Arab "loyalties" to the
West, in order that the West may be fully
warned of what is in store for the demo-
cratic powers if Arab policies are to be
trusted and tolerated.
Let us look at the record of the Arabs'
attitude towards the Western democracies.
Their position in World War I is exposed
in the following few statements we have
culled from many Arab declarations during
that period of crisis for freedom-loving
democracies:

"

"The truth of the matter is that the national
desire for independence was confMed solely to
the few educated Arabs in the cause, such as
Feisal, and that among the fighting men and the
sheikhs of the tribes who led them, this feeling
was conspicuous by its absence . . The only
method of keeping these patriots in the field was
by payment in gold."

—Major C. S. Jarvis, Governor of Sinai (who worked
among the Arabs for 18 years), "Three Deserts,"
pp. 299-303.

"Most of the Arab races fought through the
war for their Turkish oppressors. The Palestinian
Arabs fought for the Turkish rule."

—Prime Minister David Lloyd George of Great Bri-
tain, as cited by Carl Hermann Voss in "The Pal-
estine Problem Today: Israel and Its Neighbors,"
P. 42 .

Coming closer to the present era; here
are a few facts about the Arabs' position in
World War II:

Over '70% (85,800) of the men and 40'. -c (50,400)
of the women of eligible age in Jewish Palestine
volunteered for war service in Allied cause.
About 1c2-<- (12,440) of the total number of
Arabs in Palestine were recruited in the British
services. This number was further reduced by 50(7-
during the war through desertions and discharges.

—Esco, Foundation for Palestine, "Palestine, A Study
of Jewish, Arab and British Policies," p. 1021:
The Nation Associates "Could the Arabs Stage an
Armed Revolt Against the United Nations?"
—Memorandum submitted to General Assembly of
the United Nations, October 1947, pp. 7 and 8.

"The Arab community in Palestine ... showed
itself largely indifferent to the outcome of the
war. Out of a population twice as large as the
Jewish, only 12,445 persons were recruited for
military service . The flight of the Mufti, Haj
Amin el-Husseini, to Italy and Germany, and his
active support of the Axis, did not lose for him
his following, and he is probably the most popular
Arab leader in Palestine today."

gators of war against Israel, whether they
are anti-Semites in the West, anti-Israelis
in Arab lands or Council Judaists.
One particular lie must be exposed: the
claim, made here by an Iraqi rabble-rousing
war propagator and repeated by misinformed
commentators: that Israel is better armed
than all the Arab states combined. The facts
are that Egypt has Valentine tanks, which
she has secured from Belgium; that Great
Britain contracted in 1949 to sell Egypt 64
Centurion - tanks and that 30 of them already
have been delivered; that Egypt has vast
stores of machine guns which Israel has been
unable to obtain.
The Manchester Guardian exposed the
lie of Israel's arms superiority in an editorial
in which it declared that—
"The military part of Egypt's budget
is larger than Israel's total budget, military
and civilian. Egypt has thirty Centurion
tanks; Israel none. It has four times as
many jet planes as Israel. Its artillery is
about twice as strong. Israel may be su-
perior in efficiency, morale, and certain
weapons. But it is hard to think that Egypt
can have genuinely regarded itself in dan-
ger, especially as Egypt has a short frontier
to defend and Israel a very long one; for
Egypt can presumabliy expect help from
its Arab allies if it is attacked."
But the lies continue to multiply. Arabs
are gaining platforms in this country, as vVas
evidenced by an Iraqi appeal to hatred be-
fore Detroit's Economic Club recently.
Fortunately, there are a few level-headed
people left who are continuing the battle for
justice and for truth, as we witness in a
column in the Detroit News by its ablest
writer. W. K. Kelsey, who declared:
"The first nation to recognize indepen-
dent Israel should be the last to desert her."
Would that this could be adopted as a
motto by all democratic nations! But if it
will serve as our motto, Israel will be secure.
As the United States acts in the present
crisis, so will the democratic world. May
Israel's first friend remain her chief ally in
a battle for justice and for a people's survival.

In the original introduction to this book, written in Revenna in

1907, and reproduced in this English translation, Prof. Buber stated:

"The legend of the Baal-Shem is not the history of a man but the
history of a calling. It- does not tell of a destiny but of a vocation.

The titles of the stories are in themselves fascinating. The cycle
begins with "The Life of the Hasidhn" and the stories are of
"Hitlahavut: Ecstasy," "Avoda: Service," "Kavana: Intention" and
"Shiflut: Humility." These titles, in themselves, provide an excellent
idea of the story-teller's moods and intentions, of the philosophy of
a simple movement that cast its influence upon large numbers of
Jews and inspired many among other peoples.

The other stories, "The Psalm-Singer," `'The Threefold Laugh,"
"The Shepherd," "The Judgement," "The Prayer-Book," and all
the others, follow the same pattern—of inspiration, of mythical
messages that inspire people to a good life.
Dr. Buber, as the great interpreter of the Hasidic idea, injects
a strong personality in the stories he retells so beautifully in the
fascinating work "The Legend of the Baal-Shem."

Rabbi Rabinowitz's Sermons

South Africa Chief Rabbi's
'Sparks From the Anvil'

South Africa's Chief Rabbi Louis Isaac Rabinowitz has gained
worldwide fame as scholar, preacher and author. A fearless fighter
for just causes, he has defied many conventions in his defense of
ideas relating to Jewish rights, the protection of Israel and the
rights of minorities.
His sermons_for Sabbaths, festivals and holydays, published by
Bloch wider the title "Sparks -From the Anvil," is certain, therefore,
to attract wide interest.

Rabbis will find his book of special value as a guide in their
studies of Jewish problems. Laymen, as well, will be well compen-
sated spiritually in reading these sermons.

At the very outset, Dr. Rabinowitz offers good advice to his
readers with three introductory essays. '*- The Effect of the Sermon,"
"The Sermon and the Service'' and "Advice on Preaching." These
are the essays that lead the reviewer to believe that rabbis who
seek guidance in homiletics will find "Sparks From the Anvil" a
collection of sermons well worth using as a guide.

All the Sabbaths, festivals and holydays are provided for with
special sermons, and in most instances Rabbi Rabinowitz presents
-topics that apply the past to the present and do not ignore the
future.

Many of the world's pressing problems, and all of Jewry's con-
cerns are covered eloquently in this book. It is a most commend-
able volume.
