U. S. Government sources said

Canadian Government Asked
To Sell Arms to Israel

OTTAWA, (JTA)—Canada has
been asked to supply arms to
Israel. Speaking at a news con-
ference here, Michael S. Comay,
Israel's envoy to Canada, de-
clared that Israel had "made ap-
proaches" to buy weapons from
all Western countries including,
by implication, Canada.
Mr. Comay revealed that Can-
ada had supplied Israel with
some small surplus arms in the
past. He declined, however, to
say whether Israel had made any
specific requests for further
weapons purchases at this time.'

Ben Gurion
Stresses Peace Aims

JERUSALEM, (JTA) Pre-
mier David Ben-Gurion received
Maj. Gen. E. L. M. Burns, United
Nations truce chief, in a 45-min-
ute session during which the Pre-
mier reiterated Israel's determi-
nation to defend itself from any
and all attacks but at the same
time offering the hand of peace
to all states.
Israel's goal is peace, the Pre-
mier told the UN official. "With
all our hearts we want peace
and good neighborliness and we
'are prepared for cooperation with
all our neighbors for the pros-
perity and well-being of the Mid-
dle East and for the strengthen-
ing of world peace."
"We never have initiated nor
will .we ever initiate war against
anyone," Mr. Gurion continued.
"We do not covet a single inch
of foreign soil, but as long as
we live we will not permit any-
one to rob us of a single inch of
our land. We see no reason for a

by James de Rothschild, former

Mr: Rothschild, who criticized
those in Israel who spoke of a

the Tripartite Declaration was

the Middle East balanced and
had failed to do so. Another
speaker at the dinner was Israel

France Resumes
Arms Shipments to Egypt

PARIS, (JTA) — A spokesman
for the French Foreign Office
confirmed that France will re-
s u m e munitions shipments to
Egypt because Cairo radio-broad-
casts have eased attacks on
France and the North African
situation is returning to normal.
In Rome,•it was announced that
Italy would refuse exgort licenses
for - 30 Vampire jet fighter planes
which Egypt has ordered from a
priirate Italian manufacturer.
A report from Geneva said that
the Western Big Three foreign
ministers, during a meeting.there,
had decided to impose diplomatic;
economic and some military sanc-
tions, backed by air and naval
blockade, if necessary, against a
Middle East agressor.
Prime Minister Eden's propos-
als for peace based on compro-
mises and revision of territory
drew sharp blasts in Israel and
an especially stern rebuke from
Prime Minister Ben-Gurion.
In Geneva, the United States
warned the Soviet Union that
continued supplying of weapons
to Egypt and other Middle East
states threatened the foundation
of any peace between the Com-
m u n i s t and non - Communist
worlds. Secretary of State John
Foster Dulles bluntly told Soviet
Foreign Minister V. M. Molotov
that he was concerned "that Rus-
sia is serving bellicose intentions
by stepping up its arms supplies
to the Middle East area."
