Although Read,
Our Face Is Red

In newspaper jargon, a short
item of three or four lines used
to fill a column to avoid leaving
blank space is called a filler.
These items usually relate
timely, interesting or unusual
facts. The Jewish News fre-
quently uses quotes from the
Bible, the Talmud, other sources
of Jewish • literature and life
and from great men for its filler
material.
The other week, however, we
tripped ourselves up when we
used the following quotation:
"Who is wise? He that learns
from everyone. Who is power-
ful? He that governs his pas-
sions. Who is rich? He that is

MIAMI BEACH, Fla, — The
60th annual convention of the
Jewish War Veterans, scheduled
to continue here throughout the
week, is the largest in the Vet-
erans' groups history. The parley
also marks the 28th convention
of the group's Ladies Auxiliary.
Members of the JWV National
Executive Committee Monday
heard Isaiah Minkoff, executive
director of the National Com-
Munity Relations Advisory
Council, at a luncheon tendered
him.. Mr. Minkoff likened the
work of the Jewish Community
Relations groups to that of the
United Nations. He also stressed
the fact that in the East-West
conflict in the world today,
which he termed a _ conflict to
secure the adherence of the un-
committed Asian and African
peoples, Jewish community rela-
tions workers had a right to
consider every aspect of their
work a vital sector in the battle.
The Communists, he noted, ex-
ploited every lapse from the U.S.
own high standards in dealing
with minority group s. The
NCRAC leader also said that the
JWV, as veterans' groups
which recognize the importance
of this struggle, could alert.other

Mr. Minkoff also underscored
hi-s—contention that no one Jew-
ish agency could "go it alone" in
this field. No one agency, he
noted, could successfully set it.
self up at the arbiter of what
was best for the Jewish commun-
ity as a whole, nor did any such
single group have the Jewish
community "in its pocket."
