The Suburban Community

63-Year-Old Bnai David
Moves North to Southfield

By the Oak-Woodser
A new congregation will rise
next year • in Southfield Town-
ship, an ever-growing area of
the South Oakland County scene.
Cong. Bnai David,
. which will
,
be 'new to the area, is steeped in
tradition, being - the fourth old-
est synagogue in Detroit. Mem-
bers will continue worship in the
present building until the com-
pletion of the new structure in
the summer of 1956.
The building will be the fourth
site of Cong. Bnai David, which
was organized in 1892 by its
Russian i m rni gran tfounders.
There are some peoPle who; still
affectionately' call the synagogue
"the Ruschishe Shul."
Its first permanent home was
on Adelaide, between Hastings
and Rivard. This was built in
1900: Only four years • later,
with a substantial growth in
membership, Bnai David pur-
chased the Winder Street Sy-
nagogue, from - Cong. Shaarey
Zedek, which was then build-
ing its -own new -edifa•ce on
Brush Street. • •
The present building on Elm-
hurst and 14th vas completed in
1928. In this location it has wit-
nessed its greatest growth. The

congregation now numbers 400
member families, and has facili-
ties for 1,600 worshippers.
According to Rabbi Hayim Do-
nin, who is the fourth In a line
of distinguished congregational
spiritual leaders, the move to
Southfield Township is prompt-
ed by the same reason as each
of the other changes—it is in a
neighborhood from which its
members have gradually moved
away and to which it is unable
to attract new members.
Under the guidance of
Charles N. Shere, its president,
and other leaders, Bnai David,
unable to find a location for a
new synagogue within the De-
troit city limits, acquired a nine-
acre tract of land on Southfield
near 9 1/2 Mile, in March, 1954.
What was then considered a
bold move has since proved a
wise choice. In just a little over
a year, sparsely-populated South-
field Township has shown the
growth that Oak Park has in
the past few years.
Sketched briefly, - the new
Bnai David will consist of
- three units, a 1,200' seat sanc- •
tuary, a' social hall seating 450
people at dinner tables and an
educational wing. -
On Sept. 11, ground was
broken for the first unit, the
social hall and associated facili-
ties, which will be completed by
summer of 1956. -
Construction on the other two
units will begin the following
year. The cost of the - overall
building is $750,000, of which
$320,000 has a 1 r e a d y been
pledged. -
The month of November has
been established as a period of
intensive campaigning; and it is
expected that another $100,000
will be pledged during that
period.
