Bennett Cerf, president of
Random House Publishing Co.
and Modern Library Books, will
be guest speaker at a meeting
sponsored by Temple Beth El
Men's Club at 8:30 p.m., Thurs-
ddy, in the temple.
A Phi Beta Kappa at Colum-
bia University, Cerf was a re-
porter for the New York Herald
Tribune and a clerk on the stock
exchange before he became a
publisher with the purchase, in
1925, of the Modern Library
Series.
A few years later, he founded
Random House, which has pub-
lished the works of Eugene
O'Neill, Sinclair. Lewis, William
-Faulkner, Truman Capote and
Mac Hyman.
Cerf, himself, is an author, his
latest work being "An Encyclo-
pedia of Modern American Hu-

Inauguration Service
For New Officers

- Temple Israel will devote sab-
bath eve services, at 8:30 p.m.,
today, to the inauguration of
officers and members of the
board of trustees and to welcome
new members of the congrega-
tion.
Officers and board members
of tee temple's affiliate organ-
izations also will be installed.
These are the Sisterhood, Men's
C1u13, Young Marrieds Group and
Youth Group.
Dr. Leon Fram and Rabbi M.
Robert Syme will officiate, with
Dr. Pram preaching the sermon
on "Religious Liberalism."
Lotiis H. Schostak, president of
the congregation, will conduct
the ceremonial of inauguration,
and one member from each of
the groups will respond. The of-

Local Temples to Host
Reform Conference

The three Detroit area Reform
temples will serve as hosts to
visiting delegates from Illinois,
Minnesota, Wisconsin and other
parts of Michigan at the biennial
convention of the Great Lakes
Region, Union of American He-
brew Congregations.
Temple Israel, Temple Beth El
and Temple Emanu-El members
have met to plan the parley,
scheduled for Nov. 18 to 20.
The convention will open with
sabbath services at 8:30 p.m.,
Nov. 18, at which Dr. - Maurice N.
Eisendrath, president of UAHC,
will be the guest preacher.
Round table discussions on
worship, social action and educa-
tion and a clinic on temple ad-
ministration will be held the fol-
lowing two days at the Park
Shelton Hotel.
The convention banquet, to be
held Nov. 19, at the Sheraton-
Cadillac, will be addressed by
Dr. George B. Lieberman, of
Rockville Centre, N. Y.
Hyman Bylan, of Grand Rap-
ids, is the president of the Great
Lakes Region, and Rabbi Harry
Essrig is the director.

Dr. Rigler Gets Cancer Post

What is believed to be the first
Reform Jewish Women's Retreat
was held last week by the Sister-
hoOd of Temple Beth El. A limit-
ed group of 20 members attended
the program,. held at Haven Hill,
Edsel Ford's fortner estate.
Dr. Richard C. Hertz direc,ted
the two-day program. of prayer,
study _ and discussion. Three
major topics were discussed: the
histof-y of- Reform Judaism, its
philosophy and challenges; what
Jews believe; and haw to appreci-
ate and understand the Bible.
Mrs. - Sanford Klein was in
charge of planning the retreat.

CHICAGO, (JTA) Chicago's
largest and most active Jewish
edutatianal and recreational cen-
ter, - the Jewish - Peaple's Institute,
has closed its doors to make way
for a public school.
The center, which has served

tens upon tens of thousands -of
men and women of all ages, was
built in 1927 at a cost of $2,000,-
000. It was recently purchased
by the Chicago Board of Educa-
tion for $300,000. JPI . was an
agency of the Jewish Federation
of Chicago.
