The Story of the City of Hope The story of The City of Hope is not that of one person but of many. It not only means "adding years to life" but adding "life to years" . . . When a child is healthy, school does not seem important but to one afflicted with Leukemia or Cancer school becomes a symbol of belonging with other kids. The classroom at Duarte is different . . . wheel chairs and beds take the place of desks. The walls are decorated with Walt Disney cartoons . . Parents are urged to participate in the care of their children hospitalized in the Chil- dren's Wing at the City of Hope National Medical Center. The Parent Participation Pro- gram is a new approach in pediatric treatm ent of these cruel killers. Parents come and go as they please — tend to their child's needs . . . and offer the necessary support so imnortant. Parents also learn how to care f ,r their child when discharged. The program offers invaluable aid to the young patient an d the parent psychologically. Altho Death may be around the corner, life goes on and the men of science keep fight- ing on because of their faith and hope that the students in the City of Hope School House may someday, soon, complete their course and go home to normal happy lives. Ben Goldberg Chairman of Drive Eugene Epstein President Advancements in medical research scored at the City of Hope National Medical Center, require such unique instruments as the ADL-Cohn Blood Fractionator of which only six have been built and are in use today. It is capable of swiftly separating from each other the four formed elements of blood —red and white cells, plasman and platelets— and returning to the subject only those fractions needed. This device makes possible new observa- tions in hematology and diseases manifested in the blood — the leukemias, anemias - and others. Morris Canvasser Chairman of the Board N. R. Epstein Honorary President 1955-56 Drive Detroit Business Men's Group PIONEERING DESIGN — Drs. Melville L. Jacobs (left), Chairman of the Department of Radiology, and Cheng Wu Li (right), City of Hope Physicist, designed this new type of Radioactive Cobalt Teletherapy Unit. The Cobalt "Bomb" is much simpler in de- sign, yet is as effective. This unit pioneers the way for hospitals and medical centers throughout the !lad* to utilize this cancer fighter at greatly reduced costs. On a hy- draulic lift, heavy bracing and structural costs are also lessened. The boom housing the "Bomb" was designed and constructed with the patient in mind. A chain is placed across the hallway, and should someone, in- advertently, remove the chain, the radio- active cobalt would slide into the part of the bomb that is lead-lined. Dr. Eugene Roberts, Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry, is a former Detroiter, a graduate of Wayne University and the University of Michigan. He and his associates have stirred scientific interest with their work of uncovering new biochemical clues to the mechanisms of growth in the cancer cell.
