Bar Alitzvah Club
Formed in Suburbs

The Suburban Community

Amateur Theater Group Is
Outgrowth of Enthusiasm

By the Oak-Wooclser

Organizations usually trace
their progress from the city to
the suburbs, but one exists in
the suburban area which has ex-
panded its program to include
interested people in Detroit and
surrounding areas.
The group is called the Woods
Theater Workshop, and it had
its start almost three years ago,
as an outgrowth of the South
Oakland County Chapter of Ha-
dassah.

After the first fund-raising
play given by SOC Hadassah,
many of the players, enthused
over its success, expressed an
interest in maintaining a thea-
ter group on a year-round
basis.

Under 'the guidance of Mrs.
Edward Levine, the group was
organized as the Woods Theater
Workshop. Since that time, how-
ever, there has been a big turn-
over in personnel, and the work-
shop is not affiliated with any
group, but functions indepen-
dently of any organization.
Meetings are held on the third
Monday of each month, and en-
compass every area of the the-
ater from writing to staging, act-

ing and directing. Next Monday's
meeting will include a course on
stage technique by Mrs. Levine
and a beginning course on basic
stage makeup by Davida Robin-
son.
Speakers, illustrated lectures
and basic programs along work-
shop lines are planned to pro-
vide a basic understanding of
the entire world of the theater.
It is an amateur group inter-
ested in the living theater, draw-
ing on its experience to produce
three evenings of one-act plays
during the year.
As its major production, one
three-act play is given each sea-
son, this year's being "Dangerous
Corner" by J. B. Priestley, to be
presented Nov. 18 and 19, in the
auditorium of radio station WWJ.
Sarah Stringell, of the Theater
Workshop, will direct the produc-
tion which is put on by profes-
sionals.

Even in its social programs,
the Woods Theater Workshop
maintains a flare for the dra-
matic. For its Beau Arts Ball
last year, members were
dressed in disguises, using tech-
niques they had learned in
makeup. For another program,
they came dre ss ed as the titles
of a play.

Membership in the workshop
is open to anybody interested in
any phase of the theater, from
writing to acting, from staging
to props and even the business
aspect. Information on member-
ship may be obtained from Mrs.
Siebert Mohr, LI. 5-6646, or Mrs.
Victor Martin, TO. 8-9104.
