Frank Rosenthal, at that time
City and Conference Rabbi of
Mannheim.
In August of 1939, only a few
days • before the start of World
War II, a great service was held
from the heap of rubble that
once was one of Europe's most
proud synagogues.
It was the reenactment of the
destruction of the original
temple in Jerusalem. In de-
fiance of the Nazis, hundreds of
Jews, most of them later an-
nihilated, prayed and wept and
then waited for what was to
come.
Through Dr. Hermann Maas,
an early Christian Zionist who
was a friend of the late Dr. Weiz-
mann and Theodor Herzl, Rabbi
Rosenthal was safely conducted
to the border to escape death.
Earlier, Rabbi Rosenthal had
been arrested as one of 10 hos-
tages in the Munich Beer Hall
incident of 1939. This was the last
of a series of eight arrests. Only
the sudden switch- in Nazi policy
which put the bulk of their wrath
on Great Britain saved Rabbi
Rosenthal, who was released and
then made his escape.
He left with a Torah from the
Mannheim Synagogue, w h i c h
now is in possession of the Win-
ston-Salem congregation Rabbi
Rosenthal served before coming
here.
The stone represents a tie of
the liberal Jewish . tradition of
Mannheim with the tradition
Emanu-El congregants are estab-
lishing in the suburban com-
munity.
Personally, it holds memories
—many happy, but still more
sad—for Rabbi Rosenthal, who
liVed to see the establishment of
a new shrine to Judaism.

Bits of sand and stone will lend
an international flavor to the
cornerstone laying ceremonies
planned by Cong. Emanu-El, the
Suburban Templet of Greater De-
troit, for 3 p.m., Sunday, at the
site of its new building on 10
Mile Rd., in Oak Park.
What is the spiritual signifi-
cance of sand from the West,
Indies and stone from Germany,
and why will the two objects be
placed in the cornerstone of this
area's newest synagogue?
The sand is a gift from Mikve
Israel Synagogue, in Curacao,
Netherlands West Indies, and
was sent for the cornerstone cere-
mony by its spiritual leader,
Rabbi Isaiah Jessurum Cardozo,
to Dr. Barnard L. Lieberman,
chairman of • the laymen's com-
mittee of Cong. Emanu-El.
Earlier this year, Mikve Is-
, rael celebrated its Tercenten-
ary, which coincided with our
own Tercentenary celebration.
The congregation is the oldest
existing synagogue in the
Western Hemisphere.
The sand; from the oldest
synagogue in the Americas, will
now nurture the roots of one of
the America's newest synagogues,
providing a feeling of historic
and spiritual continuity.
- The story behind the stone
which will be placed in the cor-
nerstone• box, even more than of
deep spiritual importance, holds
a strong sentimental attachment
for Dr. Frank Rosenthal, Emanu-
-El's spiritual leader who will set
the object in its place. -
Resurrected from the ruins of
the great and historic Mannheim
Synagogue, the stone was brought
to the United States ,from Ger-
many by a former-, congregant of
Rabbi Rosenthal, in Winston-
Salem, N.C., - after World War II.
The synagogue at Mannheim
was 400 years old when, on Nov.
9, 1938, the last of its strain of
26 rabbis watched as it was to-
tally destroyed by the Nazis.
The rabbi, of course, was Dr.

On the 'eve of the Holy Days,
Rabbi F rank Rosenthal, of
Temple Enamu-El, the Suburban
Temple, joined other Michigan
rabbis in -the call to American
Jewry to "identify themselves
with the program and activities
of the Zionist Organization of
America."
Rabbi Rosenthal endorsed the
ZOA program which states that
such Zionist affiliation will "en-
sure Israel's development and
Jewish survival."
The ZOA call was signed by
more than 650 rabbis of all three
branches of American Judaism —
Orthodox, Conservative and Re-
form — from all parts of the
country.
"Giving until it hurts," remarks
director Mervyn LeRoy, "is not

are more easily hurt than others."
