Britain and U. S. in Joint Effort
To Stop Middle East Arms Race

Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish. News

. NEW YORK — - The United States and Great Britain agreed Tuesday there should
be. no race to supply arms to the Middle E ast and called on the Russians as well as
other countries to refrain from such competition. A spokesman for the two nations
issued a joint statement here on talks which began Tuesday involving Secretary of
State Dulles and British Foreign Secretary Harold MacMillan. The talks were spurred by
an. Egyptian announcement that it would trade cotton for Russian arms and the effort
was used to stave off the Russian deal.
The announcement said that Britain and the United States, "have for some time
been in close consultation with each other" on this question, and added: "There has been
and will continue to be compkte harmony o f views between the two governments." It
said "both governments base their policies on a desire on the one hand to enable various
countries to provide for internal security and for their defense, and on the other to
avoid any arms race which would inevitably increase tension in the area. They con-
tinue and hope other governments will continue to be guided by these principles."
Earlier on Tuesday it was 'reported that Britain and France had planned to join
Israel in a protest against the U. S. State Department's plan to sell arms to Egypt. It also
reported that, in anticipation of Israel's protest against the sale of arms to Arabs, the
State Department proposed to sell a limited amount of arms to Israel. It has been dis-
closed, however, that the arms sales plan involved turning ;over to Egypt arms in the
amount of- $10,000,000.
As the Jewish News goes to press, it is learned that Russia and Egypt have concluded an
agreement for arms in exchange for cotton—t his despite previous assurances by Russia's
director of the Foreign Ministry to Ambassador Joseph Avid a r, of Israel, that no arrns
would be sent to Egypt. .

Dr. Leon Lapaco, the Jewish organization expressed "profound satisfaction over pledges
of t h e provisional government of integration of the Argentine family without exclu-
sions on grounds of national origin, religion or political opinions." DAIA "offers its coop-
eration in a joint effort to hasten the achievement of the ideals of liberty which would
benefit all citizens."
Meanwhile, Israel Ambassador Dr. Arieh Kubovi called on Air Commodore Julio
Krause, interim Foreign Minister in the provisional government, to inform him that

JERUSALEM—Led by President Itzhak Ben-Zvi and mem-
bers of the Israel government, the people of Israel prayed for a
full and speedy recovery of President Eisenhower during Yom

Kippur services Monday.

In the Rhavia synagogue here, President Ben-Zvi led in a
special prayer for the health and safety of Mr. Eisenhower.
Since the name of President Eisenhower's father was needed
for the prayer and none of those present knew the name, the
problem was discussed by President Ben-Zvi with several Cabinet
members and Chief Rabbi Isaac Halevi Herzog. The difficulty
was resolved with the acceptance of a suggestion by Berl
Coralnik, a member of the congregation and correspondent of
the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, who suggested that Mr. Eisen-
hower be referred to simply as "Dwight Dayid, Nessi Artzot
Habrith shel America," President of the United States.
Throughout the day, Mr. Ben-Zvi received bulletins on Mr.
Eisenhower's condition.

Some 20,000 persons visited Mt. Zion during the 24-hour
period of the holiday to pray at the Tomb of King David, which,
since Jordan's denial of access to the Wailing Wall to Jews,
has become the site for Jewish religious pilgrimages. Crowds
were so dense that a number of persons fainted.

Synagogues throughout the country were filled to capacity as
the country enjoyed a quiet holiday. All public means of trans-
portation was at a standstill.

In Haifa, members of 25 families held. a Reform service, with men and
women sitting together on benches—a practice which is not permitted

in Orthodox synagogues. This is the second unofficial Reform service to
take place in Israel.

British Chief Rabbi Brodie Prays for Eisenhower

LONDON—Dr. Israel Brodie, British Chief Rabbi, prayed for the
recovery of President Eisenhower during Yom Kippur services at St.
Johns Wood Synagogue here.
In his- sermon, Chief Rabbi Brodie declared that Jews throughout the
world, in common with well-wishers of the President everywhere, were
deeply anxious about the state of his - health. It was "appropriate and
incumbent upon us on this solemn day, when the fate of men is sealed
and determined, to invoke Divihe help and blessing on behalf of this
great ruler of a great nation, who was deeply concerned and had been
looking earnestly and steadfastly, for the preservation of peace in the
world," he said.

U.S. Rabbinical Organizations Call for Special Prayers

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Prayers for a full and speedy recovery by
President Eisenhower marked the observance by American Jewry of
Yom Kippur.
All rabbinical organizations called upon synagogues throughout the
country to offer special prayers during Yom Kippur services for the
Chief Executive's health. The Rabbinical Council of America, one of
the Orthodox groups, composed a special Yom Kippur prayer for its
congregations asking that "the Almighty strengthen our great President
Eisenhower and send him His healings so that he may continue his
services for humanity and Israel and champion the cause of liberty
and justice and freedom for all oppressed people."
The New York Board of Rabbis, which includes the Orthodox, Con-
servative and Reform rabbinate in the metropolitan area, announced that
special prayers will be read in all New York synagogues.
Israel Ambassador Abba Eban wired President Eisenhower at the
Colorado hospital where he was removed after suffering a heart attack,
as follows: "I join with the multitudes in your own. country and the
outside world in wishing you a swift return to complete health."
(Prayers for President Eisenhower's health were recited on Yom
Kippur in all Detroit synagogues. At the Shaarey Zedek, a prayer
composed by Rabbi Morris Adler was recited on Kol Nidre night.)
