$50,000 Given .to ORT
For School Expansion
NEW YORK (JTA)—The In-
ternational Cooperation Adminis-
tration agreed to allocate $50,000.
to the American •T Federation
toward the establishment of an
extensive vocational school pro- -
gram among immigrant youth in
Israel.
Announcement of the signing
of the agreement was made by
Dr. William Haber, American
ORT Federation president, of
Ann Arbor.
The funds would be used to pur-
chase -tools and machines to equip
five trade schools which are to
be organized by the ORT organ-
ization in'Israel, Dr. Haber stat-
ed. This will be the first step
toward creating a nework of 10
such special schools with an ev-
entual capacity of 1,000 students
annually.
ORT is the principal agency
providing vocational training to
Jews overseas,. maintaining over
300 schools and workshops in 19
countries.
The U.S. mission in Israel also
will lend its technical personnel
and aid wherever needed. Build-
ings and funds for operation of
the five additional schools are
to be obtained from the Israel
government, local municipalities
and community sources.
Six Persons Tried
In Orphan Kidnapping
THE HAGUE (JTA)—Six per-
sons arrested for the kidnapping
of Anneke Beekman, 14-year-old
Jewish war orphan, spirited away
after a Dutch court had ordered
her returned to the Jewish com-
munity, will go on trial before
an Amsterdam court Sept. 23. The
girl, taken from Holland to a
Belgian convent and then re-
moved just as police came to
recover her, has still not been
found.
The defendants include the
Catholic foster mother, who had
the child baptized; a former pri-
oress of a convent at Bussum,
near Amsterdam; a former prior-
ess of the Belgian convent at
Valmeer, near Liege, where the
girl as last known to be, and
an ex-priest who helped take the
girl across the border into Bel-
gium two years ago.

now has over a million boys en-
rolled.

$100,000 Libel Suit Won by Exiled Hungarian
NEW YORK (JTA)—Dr. Bela
Fabian, one-time Hugarian Jew-
ish community leader and a
member of the Hungarian gov-
ernment-in-exile, won a $100,000
libel suit against, the Hungarian
language newspaper "Egyleti
Elet."
Dr. Fabian charged that the
newspaper had libeled him in
two articles, published in Decem-
ber, 1949, and January, 1950,
which described him as a "traitor
to Jewry" and conveyed the im-
pression that he had served as a
foreman of forced laboi .ers at
the Nazi Buchenwald camp
where he was a prisoner.
Dr. Fabian was a member of
the Hungarian Parliament for 17
years.
