Kol Israel. Children's Director Here for Point Four Study Tour Danny Raskin's the variety of programs is greater here, but that "some of the com- mercial programs are pretty bad." On the other hand, she felt most of the sustaining programs were good. Kol Israel, sponsored by the Israel government, is commerci- ally free, and is supported only by small fees paid by radio own- ers, in addition to a government subsidy, Miss Herrmann said. A fairly high proportion of Is- raelis own radios, in comparison to other countries in the area and even in Europe, Miss Herr- mann added. She guessed there were better than a quarter of a million owners, in a population of about 1,500,000. Although she seemed enthusi- astic about the "$64,000 Ques- tion," the popular new TV pro- gram, Miss Herrmann thought it would go over poorly in Israel. "It would not be ethical," she said; "to give away that amount of money while most people had very little. And besides, you couldn't find anyone in Israel with that kind of money to give away." Besides Kol Israel, there are two other radio outlets in the Jewish state—Voice of Zion, the Jewish Agency station which is heard mostly outside of Israel, and the Army radio station. The principal programs are in Hebrew, but there also 10 language broadcasts, from Per- sian and Arabic to English and French. _Newscasts are given daily in French and English. aoko••ec•ooso•oofh000s The programs most popular in :FOR YOUR DANCING: Israel are sports events, mostly and basketball, panel and ENTERTAINMENT: soccer games (very much unlike the • 6:PLEASURE $64,000 Question) and musical • programs. • • • • • • Israel, too, has her disc jockeys, • although most of them present to classical an& semi-classical works • • • and speak on music, not products. • Most of the Point Four sug- • gestions that MiSs Herrmann • • to take back with her are • plans • more of a "professional thing" 9TE. 4-7730 or WE. 4-0879: and not easily translated in terms Secesemoosemeetb••saseeof the public would understand. Use of personalities to build up a program, better timing and casual speech, rather than strict- HAPPY NEW YEAR ly dignified tones, are a few ideas she hopes to work on when TO ALL MY FRIENDS she returns. While attending a summer course at the University of Wis- consin, she learned a great deal about writing and content, Miss Herrmann says. This also she Racing Commissioner plans to use when she returns. But all of this is in radio, for television in Israel is a long way off. While radio is becoming a booming operation in 'Israel, it. is probable that the young .state will not enjoy television for many years to come. This is the opinion of Miriam Herrmann, a director of chil- dren's programs for Kol Israel, the Israel broadcasting station in the Jewish state. Miss Herrmann, in the United States for six months as part of the U.S. Point Four program of technical assistance to 'foreign countries, stopped in Detroit for a few days this week. "We have neither the time nor the money for television in Is- rael," Miss Herrmann said, and from the tone she used, it was apparent that most Israelis do not think of television, or luxu- ries, but only of building up a young country. Miss Herrmann directs about eight programs a week for Kol Israel—all children's shows. They are all educational, and are geared for the age group 5 to 16. Among the subjects are plays on books, Israel history, .cus- toms, music, various discus- sions, sports and documen- taries. She praised the facilities of WDTR, the Board of Educa- tion station here, where she spent a good deal of time. The sustaining nature of the sta- tion, she said, is more similar to her programs and problems than the big stations with "all their commercials." Miss Herrmann conceded that Book Fair Again to Feature Awards Poster and literary contests for school children will be an im- portant feature of the Jewish Community Center's Fourth An- nual Book Fair to be held De- cember 3-5, at the Davison build- ing. Both contests are open to Cen- ter members and pupils of all Jewish schools. Intermediate and high school students are eligible for the lit- erary contest which offers awards in each age group. The literary contest closes Nov. 14.
