Defends City's Right
To Maintain Zoning

Editor, The Jewish News:
Regarding your news item,
"GOVERNOR BLASTS NEW
YORK ZONE RULING." This in-
volves a synagogue that seeks to
have the zoning regulations in a
residential community changed in
order that they might be able to
use the property for religious
purposes.
Proper zoning has been of great
benefit to various neighborhoods
in all of our cities. It has encour-
aged the kind of orderly and uni-
form construction that enhances
the area.
Zoning officials have endeav-
ored through the years to keep
single homes, multiple units,
store buildings and factories in
separate areas. We see all around
us, in older sections, the terrible
blight and property devaluation
which resulted from lack of ef-
fective zoning.
It appears that the synagogue
in question seeks to convert a
fine residential area. This could
well be the beginning of the de-
struction of the entire neighbor-
. hood. Members of the synagogue
add further insult to injury by
offering to give portion of the
land to the village for public
recreation development.
They knew what the zoning
was before they purchased the
property. All decent people will
defend the zoning and maintain-
ence of fine neighborhoods no
matter what group is involved.
