The term "Kiddush" is trans-
lated by the word "Sanctifica-
tion." This term is used in a
number of phrases such as
"Kiddush Levono" which is the
ceremony of "sanctifying" the
appearance of a new moon or
"Kiddush Hachodosh" which is
the "sanctification of the
month." Its most popular usage
is what is called "Kiddush Hay-
om" which means the sancti-
fication of the day." The "day,"
in this case, refers to the Sab-
bath and the Kiddush is the
benediction which is said over
the wine on the Sabbath.
The rabbis deduce the re-
quirement of "kiddush" for the
Sabbath from the famous com-
mandment which bade the Jews
to "Remember the Sabbath Day
to sanctify it." From this it was
understood that it is an obliga-
tion on the part of a Jew to
sanctify the Sabbath. According
to one statement in the Talmud,
the act of "Kiddush" was ori-
ginally instituted in the pray-
ers. Later, it was instituted to
be made later on over wine.
(Tractate Ber. 33a). Even today
one of the benedictions of the
Sabbath prayers blesses t h e
Lord for sanctifying the Sab-
bath. There a r e interesting
reasons for this requirement.
Some commentaries claim that
it was done to inspire man to
raise himself to reach the holi-
ness of the day. Making the
Kiddush would impress him
emotionally with the holiness
of the day. Some like to claim
that this is one of the instances
where man is reminded that he
himself can add to the spirit
of sanctity and that in religion
he is not merely a passive en-
tity; but an active agent who
can follow in the footsteps of
his creator in raising the ma-
terial world to spiritual heights.
Those who claim the purpose
of the Kiddush to be the in-
spiration of man emotionally,
explain the wine as an agent
that can stimulate human emo-
tions.
Others claim that the
wine is a symbol of joy and the
Sabbath is to be greeted with
joy and its greatest sanctity
cannot be reached with sadness;
but rather with happiness. Hol-
iness is thus achieved only
through real happiness and re-
ligion was never meant to be
merely a handicap to human
happiness; it -is rather the key
to its realization.
Others look upon the source
of the wine as the symbol of
unity.

nearby Winsted was so badly
damaged in the floods that the
Congregation does not know
whether it can be rebuilt.
Jewish merchants here also
were hard hit. Those in the
Main Street area suffered almost
100 per cent loss. In Torrington,
merchants estimated their losses
at 50-60 percent of inventory and
fixtures.
