Zionists Approve
`Basic Objectives'
Of Dulles Policy

Security guarantees contained.
in the Dulles Near East policy
statement should precede, rather
than follow, Arab-Israel - agree-
ment on boundaries and other
matters, the American Zionist
Committee for Public Affairs
said recently in Washington.

The Committee voiced ap-
proval of the "basic objectives"
of the Dulles plan, but warned
that an Arab refusal to nego-
tiate with Israel would veto
the entire plan.
Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein,
chairman of the Zionist group
..which speaks on behalf of the
entire Zionist movement in the
United States on matters affect-
ing American-Israel relations,
said that "the security guaran-
tees need not wait upon the at-
. tainment of agreement between
the Arab States and Israel. They
can be effected early and direct-
13r, for they are in themselves
the most effective means to bring
stability and agreement to the
area. A mutual defense agree-
ment between the United States
and Israel would help to con-
vince the Arab States that Israel
is here to stay. On the other
hand, Israel, which is complete-
13r -committed to the West, has
much to contribute to a mutual
defense program in the Near
East."
References by the Secretary of
State. to settlement of bound-
aries raised another question,
Rabbi Bernstein noted. He said
that the most effective solution
of the boundary problem "would
be to guarantee the current ar-
mistice lines, with the under-
standing that if the parties later
agreed on new boundaries, the
guarantees would be applied to
them."

David Aronson, 31, of Boston,
modern painter and art educator,
has been appointed the first di-
rector of Boston University's di-
vision of art within the Univer-
sity's school of fine and applied
arts.
Winner of the William Paige
Travelling Scholarship for study
abroad, given by the School, of
the Boston Museum of Fine Arts
he spent the two summers of 1949
and 1951 in Europe and the Near
East in study and minute exam-
ination there of art collections.
In 1944 while still a student,
his exhibited work won the prize
first by jury- and then by popular
award in the exhibition by the
Institute of Contemporary Art in
Boston.
Born in Shilova, Lithuania, in
1923, the son of the Rev. and Mrs.
Peisach L. Aronson, he came at
the age of six with his parents,
two brothers and two sisters to
the United States in 1929. They
settled in Dorchester, Mass.,
where young David early showed
artistic talent. Upon graduation
from Dorchester High School in
1941, he entered the Museum
School. He also studied at He-
brew Teachers College.

"For some time, one could be
a 'Jew' simply by being a Zionist
or by identifying oneself with
some Jewish philanthropic cause.
All this is becoming increasingly
untenable. Today if the American
Jew is to regard himself as a Jew
and if he is to be so regarded by
his non Jewish neighbors and
friends some religious association
however vague is necessary."
