Archaeological Finds in Israel By MURA LASKY Copyright, 1955, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc. JERUSALEM — Investigation of the cultural and ritual life of the Hyksos, who ruled the east- ern shores of the Mediterranean for 200 years from the middle of the 18th Century, B.C.E., may become a lot easier with the re- cent completion of archaeological I work in a temple area at Nahari- ya, in Northern Israel. Large quantities of votive vessels, metal figurines, beads, jewelry and pieces of weapons were found, in- dicating that here the Hyksos practiced the cults they had Holiday Greetings BERMAN'S CHOP HOUSE 1431 Times Square Ben Gottlieb and Sam Davis Holiday Greetings A r. "It seems certain," said Moshe Dothan, an archaeologist who di- rected the digging for the Gov- ernment's Department of Antiqui- ties, "that the whole Canaanite temple and nearby "High Place" on a hill were built as the Hyksos descended upon the area from Syria, and abandoned as the Egyptians drove them out again." The temple compound is said to have served a city at the mouth of the Gaaton River (where Nahariya now stands) as well as seafarers who called at Gaaton Port. The most exciting find which Dothan brought back to Jer- usalem was, no doubt, a stone mold from which tiny figurines were cast in bronze and silver. He cast a specimen, which turn- ed out to be a strange goddess —with big horns, a conical hat, a diadem on the forehead and a treble row of beads decorating her delicate nude body. Neither this goddess, nor the three other figurines — two repre- senting goddesses and one a god — have much in common with anything so far found in Palestine, says Dothan. "This art may have been inspired by Canaanite art, but there are some new lines. Sincerest Holiday Wishes MARY AVIS RESTAURANT 150 Bagley 323 W. Lafayette in Free Press Bldg. There seems ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ a■ no doubt to Mr. Dothan that these pieces of art were cast right on the spot — the "Bamah," or rec- tangular High Place — and sold to visiting worshippers, for in one of the smaller vessels he found a pair of horns as worn by "Let Those Who Serve You Best— Serve You Most the "Lady of Nahariya" which fit- Office and Factory Forms Underground Lawn Sprinkling ted into the mold. ' 4 A This was the second dig on the spot. Mr. Dothan found that the first building on the hill — erect- ed level with the ground and onto which the High Place was later MORTGAGE AND REALTY erected — was a square building used for cult purposes. Various 10804 Hayes, at East Outer Drive offerings were found there, simi- lar to those previously discovered LAkeview 6-3544 1250 12th WO. 5-6350 in the Temple and on the High Place. Dothan calculates that this square building was the earliest, and to it the worshippers brought their offerings; next a small High Place was erected to the south; and finally, a new, larger temple to the north, to take the place of the ground-level square temple onto which the main High Place was superimposed. Thus, the Louie A. Benton small High.Place‘fell into disuse.
