Showcase for New Jewish Artists BY JULIAN N. JABLIN "Vaudeville is dead. Radio has been' given over to the disc jockeys. Television is a high- budget monster, devouring big- name performers. Where are the young entertainers of today get- ting the experience they so badly need?" This question has been voiced by critics, stars, managers and others in the entertainment DETROIT JEWISH NEWS-79 Friday, September 16, 1955 field, and it is a serious one. Where, indeed? For those artists who concen- trate on presentations of Jewish interest, the matter has additional ramification. Until the performer has attained stellar rank, his— or her—audience is likely to be composed primarily of Jews who have a lively interest in tradi- tional drama, music and comedy. the SUSIE Q offer a fine opportunity for the entertainer to ply his trade. The agency which brings them together is the JWB Jewish Center Lecture Bureau. A Restaurant Famous for Many Good Reasons Woodward Ave. (U. S. 10), 1 /4 mile North of 12 Mile Rd. Industrial Rental Launderers TE. 1 1-4000 At this time, as the New Year begins, program chairmen i n every community across the coun- try are putting plans in shape for the coming season. They may call the results a "Jewish Cultural Series," or perhaps a "Jewish Arts Program," or even a "Jew- ish Theater Series." Whateve the name, the format is pretty standard—a balanced offering of music, dance, dramatic readings and humor spread out over a number of periodic presentations. The balance is provided in large part by the Lecture Bureau, which has had close to 30 years' experi- ence in matching the various requirements of local tastes, per- formers' availabilities, budgets and transportation schedules to fit the needsL of any given com- munity. So it is that Middleville, Ohio, (Jewish pop. 863) may -v e r y likely see a performance by a young dancer who, one day, will be on television—when TV comes to Middleville. And Bigtown, downstate, which has television, gets the chance to see—in person, not in a motion picture—the hu- morist who has appeared as guest on some of the more popular var- iety TV shows. And all this came about as a result of letters (or perhaps telegrams and phone calls) to the National Jewish Welfare Board and its Jewish Center Lecture Bureau. Eli Mintz, for example, the ■0■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■V■ ■0■04■04■ ■ beloved "Uncle David" of the Goldbergs, has written touch- 11:1 liE11:1 I rj ingly of how it feels to appear El New Year Greetings to Our before a Jewish Community Jewish Friends and Patrons Center audience. Another Lecture Bureau "first" is a scheduled tour of the "World of Sholom Aleichem" as it was originally staged in New York. And, in its efforts to introduce new Jewish talent, the Bureau has developed two innovations. One was its "Auditions," whose winners received special promo- tion and booking through the Bureau; and the newer idea is the Lecture Bureau "Showcase," spe- cial showings of Jewish person- alities to which are invited pro- gram chairmen and others in- terested in setting up cultural series for Jewish groups.
