Confession as Atonement for Sin
A Stitch in Time
The Talmud (Babli, Shabbos,
32a) says that a person who is
ill and is expected to die should
confess his sins, (pronounce
vidui) for all who are expected
to die should confess. Another
source in the Talmud says that
he who confesses before his
death has a part in the "world to
come." (Tractate Sanhedrin 43b).
The reason for this confessional
is sometimes connected with the
belief that death is a means of
atonement. Thus a person should
approach his impending demise
as he approaches the Day of
Atonement. Just as it is custom-
ary to confess one's sins before
the Day of Atonement so is it
customary to confess one's sins
before death.

Whether she was leading her
brood of 15, in pairs, and five
minutes apart to the photographer
for family portraits, or literally
counting heads before closing her
doors for the night, Ceely tackled
each • problem in her hectic life
with energy and humor. She
taught her children through her
own example love and loyalty
toward each other and herself
survived crises that would have
broken the spirit of a lesser
woman.
Her daughter Lillian still lives
in Northwest Baltimore with her
husband, Alvin Rubin, and their
12-year-old son, Ned.
HARTFORD, Conn., (JTA) —
A warm tribute to a 70-year-old
Jewish businessman who, for 23
years, has visited the State
Prison at Wethersfield each Sun-
day to aid Jewish inmates there,
was paid by a prison inmate in
an article in the Hartford Jew-
ish Ledger.
According to the article by
Fred Rothermel, a prison inmate,
his voluntary services for the
prisoners at Wethersfield have
earned for Martin B. Weiner of
Hartford, the title of Jewish re-
ligious counselor. Mr. Weiner is
now assisted on his mercy mis-
sion by two other Hartford busi-
nessmen, Nathan Herrup and
Burton Rosenfeld.

Israel Archaeologists
JERUSALEM (JTA) — A new
major discovery has been made
at the famous diggings at Bet
Shearim, between Haifa and Na-
halal, the Israel Exploration So-
ciety announced. Archaeologists
have discovered a number of
rooms and passageways carved
out of solid rock and filled with
scores of sarcophagi, many of
them decorated. The excavations,
now in their eighth year, have
revealed many objects dating
back to the period of the Sec-
ond Temple, which was de-
stroyed by the Romans 1,900
years ago.
