By SIDNEY KARBEL

President, District Grand Lodge No. 6

Only the major aspects of the
program of District Grand Lodge
No. 6 of Bnai Brith — for the
year 5716 — can possibly be cov-
ered in the limited space avail-
able.
Oct. 13, 1955, will /nark the
112th birthday of Bnai Brith, the
oldest and largest Jewish serv-
ice organization in point of con-
tinued service and operation.
Since its founding, Bnai Brith
has grown from one lodge of 12
Jewish idealists, in New York
City, to a membership of over
360,000 men and women in lodges
and chapters spanning 36 coun-
tries in the free world. While
the needs of the times required it
to . considerably expand its pro-

ly remain the same as that for
which it was originally founded:
to help unite the Jewish people;
to serve our communities, our
country and humanity.
We in Detroit are a part of
District 6 of Bnai Brith, com-
prising eight midwestern states
and four western Canadian
provinces, with a membership
of 48,000 men and 25,000 wo-
men. Naturally, the District 6
program follows the pattern set
by our national order. Let us
briefly examine our plans for
the year of 5716.
Bnai Brith's service to Israel
dates back to 1865 when it first
made a substantial contribution,
for the relief of Jew and Arab
alike, to help alleviate the suf-,
ferings of those subjected to the
tragedies of the Cholera epidemic
in Palestine. And it has continued

DETROIT JEWISH NEWS-59

On Nov. 8, 1954, Bnai Brith
launched its Bnai Brith Mar-
tyr's Forest Project of 500,000
trees as a part of the great
Martyrs' Forest of 6,000,000
trees established in the hills of
Judea, in memory of the vic-
tims of Nazi tyranny.
Dist rict 6, at its convention last
July, pledged full support to this
program, and adopted a quota of
a minimum of 48,000 trees as its
share of the
. national goal.
Bnai Brith has committed it-
self to the sale of a minimum
of $7,500,000 in Israel Bonds,
with $4,600,000 worth already
sold. District 6 leads all dis-
tricts with sales of over $1,200,-
000.
We have . adopted a motto
"Every Ben Brith an Israel Bond-
holder." In keeping with that
motto, plans have been formu-
lated for our 16 Councils and 192
lodges in the district so that new
bond sales will commence in the
fall.
Bnai Brith, in its own name,
as well as in cooperation with
other Jewish organizations, re-
peatedly has made representa-
tions to the President of our
country and to our State Depart-
ment, to take the leadership in
the establishment of peace be-
tween the Arabs and Israel; to re-
fuse to furnish arms to the Arab
nations without adequate safe-
guards against the use of such
arms against Israel; and for ma-
terials and economic aid to the
nations of the Middle East to help
promote democracy in that area.
District 6, along with all other
Districts in Bnai Brith, has gone
on record as fully supporting the
president of Bnai Brith, Philip M.
Klutznick, in thus seeking a solu-
tion to the problems in this
troubled area.
We have established regional
Anti-Defamation League boards
and committees in every state
and province in our district.
The various District 6 regional
boards and ADL committees were
instructed by the convention to
give full support and aid to the
Anti-Defamation League in its
fight for the 'revision of the Mc-
Carran-Walter Immigration Act;
for a fair • loyalty and security
procedure, for the elimination of
discrimination against Jews.
So that our youth may be-
come better Jews and better
citizens, District 6 has, in line
with the policies of the na-
tional commissions of those
agencies, adopted a program
for expanded services in those
fields for this year.
A new Hillel building will be
dedicated at the University of
Wisconsin in October; and cam-
paigns are in progress for similar
buildings at other universities in
this district. We in Michigan are
proud of the beautiful Hillel edi-
fice in Ann Arbor.
It is contemplated that many
new chapters of the Bnai Brith
Youth Organization will be
founded this year to meet the de-
mands of the Jewish youth.
Programs have been formu-
lated for continued service to our
hospitalized veterans.
Our Blood Bank program
which has been so successful,
and which has been lauded by
the American Red Cross, will
be continued and expanded.
District 6 has pledged full Bnai
Brith cooperation for Jewish
Welfare and Federation drives,
March of Dimes, Torch Fund,
Red Cross and Civil Defense ac-
tivities.
We shall continue to support
our philanthropies, including the
Leo N. Levi Memorial Hospital
for arthritics at Hot Springs,
Ark.; Bellefaire at Cleveland, for
emotionally disturbed children;
National Jewish Hospital in Den-
ver, for tuberculars; Bnai Brith
Center in Rochester, Minn., for
Jewish patients and their visitors
of the Mayo Clinic, of whom
some 30,000 visit Rochester each
year.
Bnai Brith in recent years init-
iated an adult Jewish education
Believing that every Jew
would want to be a part of this
wonderful program of service to
our people, our country and hu-
manity, we invite the, support and
memrship'
be
of all Jews.
