Israel's President Extends
Greetings to World Jewry

JERUSALEM — Israel Presi-
dent Itzhak Ben Zvi issued Rosh
Hashanah greetings to all citi-
zens of the Jewish state "regard-
less of religion and race and to
all our brethren the world over."
The statement, which reviewed
the accomplishments of the past
year and outlined tasks still
facing the young state, noted that
"our close neighbors have yet to
learn their lesson, nor have they
reconciled themselves with the
reestablishment of the state of
Israel."
He noted with "satisfaction"
that two important tasks had
been realized: continuation of
conquest of the desert in the
south and reclamation of the
mountain region and swampy
areas of the north.
"In seven years of - our exist-
ence there were added some 300
towns, villages and settlements
and today they number 770," the
statement pointed out.
Elsewhere, he added, "our pro-.

duction has increased consider-
ably. New housing schemes were
put into effect, • rail and road
communications developed and
our sea and air fleets have
grown. The tempo of immigration
has gained momentum, and near-
ly 40,000 of our brethren reached
their fatherland during the year."

He praised the army and the
corps of volunteer and paid
teachers who are helping spread
the Hebrew language and culture
to tens of thousands of new im-
migrants.

"We fervently hope for peace
in the world, for with it will
come peace to us all."
The President's message con-
tinued, "I send special greetings
to Israel defense forces, to the
police and to all our security
forces in the villages and on the
borders that stand guard by day
and by night protecting the wel-
fare of the state and its resi-
dents."

Dr. Goldstein Reports On Yugoslavian Jewry

NEW YORK (JTA) —"The
Jews in Yugoslavia, like other
groups, are free to organize them-
selves as religious and cultural
communities and to maintain
contacts with like-minded groups
in other parts of the world," Dr.
Israel - Goldstein, president of the
American Jewish Congress re-
ported today, following his re-
turn to the United States from a
two-month trip to Yugoslavia,
Turkey and Israel.
"There is no restriction on Jews
who may wish to emigrate to
Israel," Dr. Goldstein continued.

may well serve as an example
to Russia and her allies as part
of the `new look' of Soviet Corn-
munism."
Concerning Israel, Dr. Gold-
stein revealed that almost 100,000
of the 230,000 Jews living in Mor-
occo have asked to be transferred
to the Jewish State. The Israel
government, he noted, has re-
cently authorized drastic new
tax measures to raise some of
the revenue needed to transfer
the 45,000 Moroccan Jews who
are expected to arrive during the
coming year.
