Strong World War II Novel

Shapiro's 'The Sixth of June'

It is worth knowing Lionel
Shapiro, because his novel, which
deserves recognition as one of the
strongest that has been written
about World War II, may make
the screen and deserves a long
stay in the best-seller list. Sha-
piro, author of ."The Sixth of
June," born in Canada, dedicates

r

his novel to Canada. He was one
of the best war correspondents,
was on the beaches with a Cana-
dian Division on D-Day and his
reports on the war were featured
in the world's leading news-
papers.
"The Sixth of June," a Double-
day publication, is his third novel.

His first two ("The Sealed Ver-
dict" and "Torch for a Dark
Journey") were high-ranking
stories. His latest promises to
surpass his own as well as most
of the war novels in popularity.
This excellently-told tale is
about an American army officer
and a British girl. He owes alle-
giance of love. pledged to the
wife he left behind in Connecti-
cut; she is betrothed to a British
Commando hero. They fall in
love, forgetting their loyalties,
until the fatal day that shook
them out of their infatuation.
It was more than a fatal day:
it was the Sixth of June. Chur-
chill reported on it in Com-
mons, about the thousands of
boats, the immense armada that
accompanied the landings on
the beaches. It was the day of
trials and tests. On that day,
the British girl, Valerie Rus-
sell, regained her loyalty for
John, the colonel hero who was
betrothed to her, and Brad
Parker, the Connnticut news-
paperman, knew he was re-
turning to Janie. Both men
were in hospital wards, suffer-
ing from serious wounds in-
curred in the battle on the
beach. For Brad it was "a hell
of a way to sea France for the
first time." Valerie assured
him "you'll _always be in my
blood." But something stronger
than their love came into, play.
Perhaps it was both "the fog
of war" as well as Valerie's
prediction, while they were
having their love affair, before
John returned from the African
front: "the war will make it
right . . ." Brad said, just be-
fore she walked out of his life,
at the hospital, that "it didn't."
"The Sixth of June" is a very
moving story, brilliantly written.
Lionel Shapiro excels in it. He
narrates well, paints a realistic
picture of the war he personally
witnessed, displays a deep un-
derstanding of the men who made
up the allied armies. His descrip-
tion of the beachhead landing,
"Operation Overlord," is especial-
ly powerful.
He makes an interesting refer-
ence to the Jews. He describes
Valerie as having found the Am-
erican nation to be "an agglom-
eration of varied types and na-
tionalities and mentalities loosely
held together by a contagious and
undisciplined spirit of freedom.
She found that the only inhibited
Americans she met were Jews
and this discovery came as a sur-
prise. She had never before come
into contact with Jews, not even
British Jews, and had known
about them only by reading and
hearsay . . ."
The war . . . and what it has
done to all of us! .. . a thought
ascribed to Valerie,- becomes a
major cause for meditation for
the reader of this strong novel—
perhaps the strongest about the
beachheads in World War II.

Call Nazi 'Racial Expert'
To Rule on Paternity Case

MUNICH, (JTA) — The Ba-
varian State Council for Free-
dom and Justice has filed a for-
mal protest with the Ministry
of Justice against the action of a
German court at Traunstein in
designating a leading Nazi "racial
specialist" as an official court
expert in a disputed paternity
case involving a Jew who was
formerly a DP.
The Jew denies being the fath-
er of the child, for whom he is
asked to pay support. The court
commissioned an "expert opinion
on the basis of biological here-
dity" from Dr. Albert Harrasser,
although the latter lives at a
considerable diStance from
Traunstein. Harrasser, a Nazi
Party member since 1931, served
on the staff of the Nazi "Bureau
for Racial Policy" and on the
supreme staff of the brownshirt-
ed Storm Troops.

The Second Temple
Three prophets (Haggai, Ze-
chariah and Malachi) went up
with the Jews from the exile.
One who prophesied concerning
the Altar, one who stated that
it was permissable to offer sacri-
fices although there was no
temple extant and one who said
that the Torah should be written
in Assyrian' -script.—.Masecheth
Zevochim 62.
