Jerusalem Post
Editor Is New
Israel Mayor
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Gershon
Agron, founder and editor of the
Jerusalem Post, only English-
language daily in Israel, was
elected Mayor of Jerusalem. The
vote for the 62-year-old Mapai
leader was 11 far, five against
and five absten-
tions. The five
against were
iivided between
Dr.' Arieh Alt-
nan, Hefut, and
A.braham Kaariv,
Vlizrachi.
In Haifa, May-
Dr Aba Kh•shi
has been re-
lected by a ma-
jority of 13-5.
He has the sup-
?ort of a bloc
onsisting of
Achdut
Avoda, Mapam, Progressives and
the religious parties.
In Tel Aviv, the incumbent
Mayor, General Zionist Chaim
Levanon, was re-elected despite
the fact that for the first time in
many years the Mapai received
more votes than the General
Zionists in that city. In the face
of an appeal by the Mapai not to
split a "traditional" labor alliance
betwen thet Mapai and the Poale
Mizrachi, the latter and the Miz-
rachi decided to throw their
support to Mr. Levanon. On the
last elimination ballot, Golda
Myerson, Mapai, had 15 votes to
Mr. Levanon's 14, but because
two religious councillors had ab-
stained neither could obtain the
necessary majority of 16.
In Ramat Gan, Abraham Kri-
nitz, incumbent General Zionist
was re-elected Jr. Hadera, Mapai
leader Yitzhak Widerker has
been named Mayor. In Holon,
another Mapai councillor, P.
.Aylon, has been elected, and still
another Mapai choice, Y. Gadish,
is the new mayor of Acre. Four-
teen other municipalities still
have to elect mayors.
Jordanian Frontier Erupts
With New Infiltrations
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — With
the Israel-Egyptian 'border now
enjoying quiet, Israel's frontier
with Jordan erupted into vio-
lence again when, in the central
Jordan valley, infiltrators blew
up several water installations,
cut a telephone line, blasted a
fish pond and partially destroyed
a truck.
All damage was either at or
between the Israel settlements of
Tirat Zvi and Sdeh Eliyahu. The
tracks of six men were traced
back to the Jordan border by
Israel police this morning..
Netherlands Queen to Study
Hebrew With Jewish Teacher
THE HAGUE (JTA) — Queen
Juliana of the Netherlands has
said that she will very probably
undertake the study of Hebrew
under an experienced Jewish
teacher. Queen Juliana made the
statement to Chief Rabbi Dr.
Samuel Rodrigues Pereira during
a recent visit to new Jewish
homes for the aged here. She
told him of her desire to learn
Hebrew when he.showed her the
Scrolls of the Law at the new
institutions, and she showed the
greatest interest in examining
them.

DETROIT JEWISH NEWS-45
"The purpose of the Jewish.
homeland was not directed simply
at the ingathering of the home-
less and the persecuted; it was
never intended either, to with-
draw the Jewish people hi its
entirety from the diaspora; still
less was it proposed to abandon
the diaspora communities to their
spiritual fate. The Jewish home-
land was projected by world
Jewry for the maintenance of
world Judaism."

"None shall injure, none shall destroy any-
where on my holy mountain, for the land
shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
as the waters over the sea."—Isaiah 11.9.
On this Rosh Hashanah, 5716, we pray that a well-in-
formed Jewish people steeped in "the knowledge of the
Lord," shall be granted the blessings of justice and peace,
and that all mankind shall have the joy of amity and pros-
perity.
