Beersheba Headed for Vital Role in Israel's Progress

After three years of develop-
ment, Beersheba, an oasis in the
desert in ancient days, is becbm-
ing one of Israel's leading . cities.
According to Kennett Love,
New York Times correspondent
in Israel, Beersheba, the virtual
capital of the Negev, has reached
as population of 20,000, most of it
in the past three years.

Notable children's books pub-
lished in 20 foreign countries, in-
cluding five published in Israel,
make up the new exhibit en-
titled "International Children's
Books" now on view at the De-
troit Public Library, 5201 Wood-
1 - 5 ward, at Kirby.

Over 100 story and textbooks
for children were selected from
CI those displayed at the Annual
Book Fair in Washington, D.C.,
under the sponsorship of the
Washington Post and the Smith-
sonian Institute. National dolls
lent by members of the Interna-
tional Institute are displayed
along with the books.

Five of the books came from
Israel, representing the best
work of authors, illustrators, and
publishers of children's books in
that country. These include
"Gani-Gani" (Let Us Play in
Israel), a popular series of
stories, games, and lessons, writ-
ten by Levin Kipnis and Yemima
Tchernovitz and illustrated by Isa
Hershkovitz.
Two stories of Hans Christian
Andersen, "The Ugly Duckling
and Torn Thumb," feature full-
page water-color drawings, as
does "Stories of Magic."
"International C h i 1 cl•r e n s
Books" will be displayed' in the
second floor exhibit gallery at
Main Library through Sept. 22.
American editions of many of the
books can be borrowed from the
children's room on the first floor
of library.

Rabbi Ahron Opher, president
of the Chicago division of the
American Jewish Congr es s,
stated: "Incredible as it sounds,
it is a fact that residents of Chi-
cago are too often denied emer-
gency treatment in some hos-
pitals because they belong to cer-
tain races or denominations.
There have been cases where the
delay in causing the patient to
be taken to a more distant hos-
pital proved fatal."
Rabbi Opher also called atten-
tion to the fact that the present
Illinois Statute does not outlaw
discrimination based on race,
creed or color in cases of emer-
gencies caused by illness. "The
present Illinois statute dealing
with emergency medical treat-
ment requires hospitals to give
such treatment only in the case
of accident or injury," he pointed
out.
