In Washington and European
capitals, Egyptian diplomats have
told persons they considered anti-
Jewish that Egypt will soon
"amaze the world." Their boast
is_ that new weapons and a re-
organized army would enable
Egypt to occupy Tel Aviv in a
matter of hours. These circles
blame the United Nations for
Egypt's 1948 defeat. They brag
that the new war would be over
before the Security Council could
act.
Arab braggadocio being what it
is, there is a tendency to mini-
mize such threats. The State De-
partment is nevertheless nervous-
ly observing the Egyptian re-
sponse to the Soviet Union's offer

against: the monarchy. -
The most impressive items
among - the new equipment re-
vealed -were 27 60-:ton Centurion
tanks _of the fatest model pur-
chased from Great Britain. There
were new 155-mm field guns of
French design and a number of
120-mm Brandt mortars.
One hundred. Sherman tanks
passed in single file. Three regi-
ments of artillery, 29 guns each,
were seen. A battery of the new-
est • self-propelled artillery was
noted as were battalions of anti-
aircraft automatic weapons. Jets
screamed overhead while the
crowd roared its 'acclaim. There
were 36 Vampire Jets and 24
Meteors.
The New York Times noted im-
provement in Egypt's armored
and air equipment and popular
support of the army regime. Vol-
unteer National Guardsmen out-
numbered regular troops.
Creation of an industrial foun-
dation for military strength was
described by Maj. Gen. Adbel
Hakim Amer, Defense Minister
and Commander in Chief, in a
speech. Nasser made known that
Egypt is building a new army
around a core of mobile armor
with large "auxiliary elements"
supporting it. He said Egypt was
now manufacturing "light and
medium missiles."
