The ele- vator, which is Israel's tallest commercial structure, is the most modern in the Middle East. It is being operated, under a 51- year franchise from the Israel Government, by "Dagon" Batey- Mamguroth Le-Israel, Ltd. Grains of all kinds can now be unloaded in bulk from ships in Haifa port by means of a 75-foot high pneumatic elevator which moves the cargo 360 feet along the quay, discharging onto a 550- foot long conveyor belt running inside an elevated bridge. The elevator, with its 195-foot tower, is capable of discharging loading, cleaning, mixing, venti- lating, disinfecting, weighing, sorting, bagging and packing grain, fodder and seed at the rate of 200 tons an hour. The flow of grain is directed from the tower into 45 bins capable of storing 20,000 tons in the adjoining 150- foot high silo. Foreign exchange savings ex- ceeding $2,000,000 • annually are expected to accrue to the Israel Treasury through the operation of the new silo. $1,360,000 Willed to Charity By Hungarian Immigrant CHICAGO, (JTA) — A Jewish immigrant from Hungary who lived in a rented room here left more than half his estate of $2,200,000 to charity, it was re- vealed when his will was filed in probate court. A childless widow- er, Emanuel Lebowitz made his fortune in a dress .manufacturing business and later on the stock market. He was 68 years old when he died July 7. His will divided an estimated $1,360,000 in equal shares among the National Jewish Hospital in Denver, the Jewish Federation of Chicago, the Shrine Hospital As- sociation and the Illinois Masonic Hospital. Lebowitz's attorney, Louis H. Goelbel, stated that "Mr. Lebowitz believed that both the Shrine and Masonic hospitals had done so much good that his phi- lantrophies should extend beyond his own religion."
