A Debt in Writing

A friend of Jack Benny's, was
in difficulties the other day
Jack's friend had loaned a
friend $500. He had nothing in
writing confirming the loan.
The friend proved to be merely
friendly. Jack's friend stood to
lose the five hundred. In des-
peration he consulted Benny.
"That's not so hard," Jack
consoled his friend. "Write him
and say you need the thousand
dollars at once."
"You mean the five hundred
dollars," Jack's friend inter-
posed.
"No! I don't," said Benny.
"Say a thousand dollars, and he
will write back he only owes
you five hundred. Then you
have it in writing."
