The capital of Sinai is El-
'Arish, home to 10,000 people who
cultivate date palms on one of
the world's oldest highways. It is
near the Mediterranean entrance
and has served as a thoroughfare
for ancient Pharaohs and modern
conquerors alike.
Over 3.000 years ago, Moses led
the Israelites out of Egypt.
Eventually Sinai or the land
of Edom became the stepping-
stone from Egypt to the Promised
Land for the Israelites as it had
been for the people of antiquity
before them.
It is now known that Egypt
is not the cradle of the human
race. Ruins of ancient Biblical
cities in Mesopotamia have been
found that ante-date the old-old
sites found in the Upper King-
dom.

The first people to found
Egypt probably came from the
north. They must have journied
through the Holy Land, then
crossed the Sinai Peninsula to
reach the Land of the Nile
where they settled so many
thousands of years ago.
This small country is not en-
tirely a romantic land of Egyp-
tian_ monuments and inscriptions;
or ruins of copper and turquoise
mines, or of Biblical history. It
is a wide-awake country playing
its important part in the affairs
of today.
She has a number of thriving
cities with over • 18,000 inhabi-
tants. Quarrying and oil drilling
is going on, and manganese is
being extracted from Sinai. And
to the west of this wedge of land
is the Suez Cahal. It is an exten-
sion of the Gulf of Suez when
the Isthmus, was cut through to
the Mediterranean Sea.
Though it has been estimated
that half the commerce between
Europe and the Far East passes
through this canal, with as many
as 6,000 ships a year making the
transit, Sinai, ancient Edom of
turquoise and copper where
Moses and the Israelites wan-
dered for 40 years, is still an im-
portant highway between Egypt,
which governs Sinai, and Israel
which helped make its history.

He Never Smokes Them

In an interview with the press,

Tony Martin, whose famous ten-
or voice has earned him millions,
stated: "I never smoke. Smoking
destroys the control and the
quality of the voice." A newsman
inquired: "But didn't you en-
dorse a cigarette? It seems to
me I remember some ads. . ."
"Ah," said Tony, "do you re-
call what I said? 'These ciga-
rettes do not irritate my throat.'
Quite true. I never smoke them."
