WE'RE NOT telling stories out
of school because Harry Steller
can't get over it himself . . . and
has been telling folks about it
. . . He used to drive 20 miles
out of the city to buy "Fresh
Country Butter" from a farmer
. . . A few cents added to the
price made it more expensive
than the butter obtainable in the
city, but somehow the country
butter was worth the difference
in cost . . . Harry, and many of
his friends, made the trip often
. . . and in time, the farmer had
dozens of customers from the
city . . . But one morning last
week, Harry, driving out extra
early, happened to notice a large
sign on the tenre . . . It was
addressed to the driver of the
city dairy truck, and it said, "60
pounds of butter today, please."

ON VACATION out west, Sam
Hechtman • reports that George
Jessel was recently engaged to
substitute at a Las Vegas night
spot for Joe E. Lewis, who was
ailing . . . At the last momen
Eugenie Baird was summoned to
fill in for Peggy Lee, likewise
on the sick list . . After the
changes had been announced to
the audience, Jessel opened his
act with, "I think this show was
booked by the Blue Cross."

MORRIS BR.ANDWINE claims
that some of the TV movies are
so old they show bank bandits
driving up in front of a bank
and finding a parking space!

FOLKS WHO'VE been com-
plaining about no place to park
at Congregation Adas Shalom
will be glad to know, that some-
thing is being done about the
situation . . • As soon as all the
houses are bought on the east
side of the shule, space will be
made . . . The "too much" money
that stood in the way of pur-
chasing the ground now used as
a parking lot by the Mayflower
Church at the time Adas Shalom
was being built has turned out to
be anything but that

With the first great Yarkon-Negev irrigation pipeline (pictured
above) now in operation, Israel's people, with the help of funds
from the United Jewish Appeal, are boldly going ahead with
construction of a second Yarkon-Negev pipeline this year. Sched-
uled for completion in 1958, this second, giant-size pipeline will
make possible the irrigation of an additional 50,000 acres of desert
wasteland. Together, the two pipelines will help more than 400,000
persons in the south of Israel to become self-supporting on farms
and in new cities. UJA supplied 65% of the funds needed for the
construction of the first Yarkon-Negev pipeline.

US Unit Commissions Israeli Scientist
For Human Stratosphere Travel Study

An Israeli scientist, who for
years has been investigating the
law of flow and liquids, has been
commissioned by the European
Office, Air Research and Develop-
ment Command of the United
States Air Force, to pursue a
complex research project which
is expected to prove significant to
human travel through the stra-
tosphere, or the passage of other
bodies, such as guided missiles,
through the upper layers of the
air.
Prof. Markus Reiner, head of
the rheological laboratory of
Technion, Israel Institue of Tech-
nology, and chief of the institute's
Department of Mechanics, will
utilize his Technion laboratories
in Haifa to delve into the phe-
nomena observed in the floW of
liquids. Arrangements for the
sponsored 'project were completed
by a three-man delegation of U.S.
Air Force officers during a recent
visit to Technion.
During a theoretical investi-
gation conducted during recent
years by Prof. Reiner on the
law of flow of liquids, he dis-
covered that certain phenome-
na never' before observed were
theoretically possible in
liquids. He did not know that,
almost simultaneously with his
research, a scientist in England,
Dr. Karl Weissenberg, actually

Third Cinerama Production
To Film 70 Modern Wonders

Lowell Thomas and Merian C.
Cooper, the producers of the
third Cinerama production "Sev-
en Wonders of the World," are
now filming what amounts to the
70 wonders of modern times.
Cinerama cameras will bring
to its audience 70 modern won-
ders, from which each viewer
can pick his own seven wonders.
To accomplish the filming task
of a round-the-world airplane
ride, Thomas and Cooper have
skirted the earth, and taken their
viewers to see such sights as the
Taj Mahal, things in India, be-
hind the Iron Curtain in China,
into the crater of Italy's volcanic
Mounte Vesuvius and many
other lands.
Walter Thompson, who is di-
recting the American sequences
has just filmed Boulder Dam, the
Grand Canyon and Yosemite and
is scheduling the international
locks at Sault St. Marie.
Thomas and Cooper also pro-
duced the first Cinerama produc-
tion "This Is Cinerama" which
ran nearly two years at the
Music Hall in Detroit which was
attended by over. 1,200,000 per-

Sons.
