On the Record

Foul Hands . . .

The Egyptian and Arab propagandists in the country are natur-
ally drawing inspiration from payroll and one would have to be
hopelessly naive to believe them capable of decency except perhaps
that crackpot segment of American Jewry which lards its heritage
with Arab blessing. And this holds even when the gentlemen in
question speak for the Arab diplomatic echelons in the United
Nations.
There have been many bitter and vile outbursts from that
source in recent years, but none compares in villainy with the one
published in the letter-to-editor column of the New York Times.
Ostensibly the letter, signed by Abdel Mawgoud Hassan, press
attache of the Egyptian delegation to the United Nations, is a reply
to a letter by Joshua H. Justman, director of press relations to the
Israel delegaion, but in essence it is a sickening diatribe whose
direction is as obvious as it is brutal and false. Letter-exchanging
Ask, 'will not alter the facts of history. But it is questionable whether a
gentleman who is impudent enough to call an Israeli foray against
Egypt "repetitions of Nazi brutality" either knows or cares to know
the facts of history. We would only like to remind him that it is a
fact of history that Cairo was cringing and in joy when Rommel's
armies were giving signs of invincibility, that Egypt had given
Hitler a Mufti and that the one-time-would-be-enslavers of ancient
Israel had given shelter to the Mufti when that criminal escaped
from the gallows that should have been his fate if certain frightened
statesmen hadn't been suddenly transformed into gutter politicians.

Good News . .

When an anti-Semite complains he can't make a living from
the racket the story naturally comes under the heading "good
news." The "gentleman" who made the admission in Montreal that
he must go to work for a living if he is to continue publishing his
hate-sheet is not a tycoon in the field and his crocodile tears may
not be symptomatic of the fix of the others of his ilk. But there is
a feeling in this corner that the anti-Setnitic publishers are begin-
ning to find the business less and less lucrative and that if they are
ultimately driven from the American scene it will be because of the
inexorable capitalistic principle that a business without profit is
for idealists and not for money-seekers.

Old Trouble Spot . . .

at

Gaza, current site of trouble for Israel, is associated with the
exploits of Samson. And if you have read your Bible you know of
course that the Israelites of old too had trouble with Gaza. But if
the Israelites in the era of the Judges stood in terror of the Philis-
tines, there is no comparable situation today, for Israel today has
many Samsons capable of taking the jawbones of an ass and smiting
the Philistines by the thousands. When Samson cast away the jaw- -
bone with which he smote the Philistines, the Bible relates, he was
sore athirst and might have died had not the Lord caused water to
'come out of a hollow. The danger from thirst in tlfat vacinity is
gene now, largely through irrigation pipes laid fram Jerusalem to
Gaza with funds from State of Israel bonds. But from a recent item
in the New York Times we learn other trouble has arisen there over
the water. The Gazaites stole the pipes under cover of night. But
one night they were dismayed and bewildered. The pipes were gone.
The Israeli settlers simply took the pipes in over the night.

American Jews were called on
this week by the United Jewish
Appeal to help transfer 10,000
Moroccan Jews from 'the most
exposed sectors of that violence-
ridden land to Israel in the next
sixty days. William Rosenwald,
UJA General Chairman, was
joined by , the other UJA Na-
tional Officers in issuing an
urgent plea to the American Jew-;
ish community to raise $10,000,000
in cash within the next few
weeks to carry out the emer-
gency immigration push.
Success for this emergency re-
settlement of 10,000 Jewish men,
women and children would mean
that the first few weeks of the
forthcoming Jewish year 5716
would see the transfer of nearly
half as many North African Jews
as were brought to israel during
the entire year 5715.
The emergency UJA drive
came in response to a plea for
speediest action presented by
Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman,.
UJA executive vice-chairman,
who last Friday returned to New
York from a 40 day inspection
trip of North Africa, • Israel .and_
other overseas areas. Rabbi
Fiedman conferred with leaders
of the Israel government, Jew-
ish Agency, the Joint Distribu
tion Committee and Moroccan
Jewry in his on-the-spot survey.
