Worldwide 'Operation Rosh Hashanah' Drive to Finance
NEW YORK — Twenty-four Chaplain in the area. -
African Migration
Flying out of Naples, Italy, the
Jewish chaplains who recently

completed training at chaplains'
schools have reported •for active
duty in time to officiate at Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur serv-
ices for Jewish military person-
nel in the U. S. armed forces, it
was announced by the National
Jewish • Welfare . Board (JWB),
coordinator of the global "Opera-
tion Rosh Hashanah" for mili-
tary personnel.
The U. S. Air Forces will fly
four U. S. Jewish chaplains on a
High Holy Day tour of. some
10,000 miles to conduct services
at remote points in Iceland, Lab-
rador, Bermuda, Azores and
Alaska.
The 350 full- and part-time
Jewish Chaplains engaged in the
world-wide . Holy Day services
Were recruited and endorsed by
JWB's Commission on Jewish
Chaplaincy, coMposed of repre-
sentatives of the three major
rabbinical - bodies in the U. S.
In Alaska, troops will be trans-
ported sin some cases some 1,500

stations to Fairbanks and Anchor-
age. Religious coverage will be
provided by the lone Jewish

fars, skull caps, prayer shawls,
greeting cards and kosher foods
were shipped by JWB months
before the Holy Days.

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — T h e
United Jewish Appeal will start
an immediate, emergency cash,
campaign to raise by mid-October
$10,000,000 to finance the im-
migration of North Airican Jews
to Israel, Rabbi Herbert A. Fried-
man, executive vice-chairman of
UJA, revealed prior to departing
for Paris and- New York.
The UJA executive head, who
deplored exaggerations of the
plight of the North African Jews,
said that the Jews had not been
primary targets in the progroms
in several Moroccan cities in the
past few weeks, but that the
mobs had turned on the Jews in
frustration. He said that the UJA
plans to make North African im-
migration . the top priority of its
1956 drive.

Dutch Jewish Body Joins
World. Jewish Congress
The principal Jewish com-
munal body in Holland, the Ned-
erlands-Israelitisch Kerkgenoot-
schap, has affiliated with the
World Jewish Congress, Dr. I.
Schwarzbart, director of its or-
ganization department, announced

'bring 45,000 North African Jews
to Israel in the next 12 months
but this • figure is subject to
change depending on conditions
in that area, he said. If relative
calm is - restored, the number
May be reduced to 20,000, but if
the violence grows migration will
be • increased to as much as
100,000. The cost of transporta-
tion and initial absorplion of
each North African immigrant is
$1,000 Rabbi Friedman said.
